CTTC - Blanding's Turtle, Emydoidea blandingii by James Harding
Considering the long distance that often must be traversed by the young to reach suitable aquatic habitat, one might conclude that Emydoidea neonates are either extremely resistant to desiccation and temperature fluctuations, or extremely unlikely to survive their first weeks out of the nest.
Possibly the latter presumption is closer to the truth, as young Blanding's turtles are rarely encountered in the wild.
Fortunately, Emydoidea has not been as heavily exploited for the pet trade or human food as certain other species, and we can hope that there will be no increase in demand.

Using innovative approaches to model occurrence of Blanding's Turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) in Nova Scotia
Blanding’s turtles (Emydoidea blandingii) are considered endangered in Nova Scotia, as they are found in a small population complex, disjunct and isolated from the main range of the species, centered around the Great Lakes.
Most of the known Nova Scotia range is located in working landscapes, which may become a threat to long term survival of this species in the province.

Blanding's Turtle is named for Dr. William Blanding, a naturalist who discovered the species.
Its genus name is "Emydoidea", which is derived from the Greek word "Emydos", which means "freshwater turtle" and "oides" means "likeness to", in this case a likeness to the "Emys" genus.
Blanding's Turtles live mostly in northern regions, because while it can tolerate colder temperatures, it does not handle warm temperatures well.

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) was used to compare the Nova Scotia population of Blanding's turtle (Emydoidea blandingii) with several populations from the species’ main range.
While this study is preliminary, the results suggest that the Nova Scotia population of Blanding's turtle may be important to the maintenance of genetic diversity in the species.
