Topic: En (typography)

Typography - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Typography is the art and technique of setting written subject matter in type using a combination of fonts, font size, line length, leading (line spacing) and letter spacing.
Typography is performed by typesetters, compositors, typographers, graphic artists, art directors, and clerical workers.
Typography with modular moveable metal type began in 13th-century Korea, and was developed again in mid-15th century Europe with the development of specialized techniques for casting and combining cheap copies of letterpunches in the vast quantities required to print multiple copies of texts.

Typotheque: Women Graphic Designers by Ellen Lupton
She and her students developed a model of ‘typography as discourse,’ drawing on post-structuralist literary theory, that posited the reader as an active participant in the communications process.22 Designers at Cranbrook employed layers of texts and images to create complex, deliberately challenging compositions.
Born and raised in Mexico City, she studied design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.23 While serving as the school’s design director from 1991 to 1996, she created numerous publications and posters for the school and other institutions.

Phone numbers separated by spaces are quite common in Europe, less so in the U.S. When creating em and en dashes, you can add space before and after the dash, or not.

The Project Gutenberg FAQ - V-91 - Project Gutenberg Europe
In typography, there are four standard types of dashes: the hyphen, the en-dash, the em-dash, and the three-em-dash.
Originally, printers called these the "em-dash" because it was the same width as the capital letter M in whichever font they were using, the "en-dash" because it was the same width as the capital letter N, and the "three-em-dash" because it was as long as three capital Ms.
In typography, the en-dash is a little longer than the hyphen, and is typically used for duration, where you could substitute the word "to".
