Topic: Enargite

  ENARGITE (Copper Arsenic Sulfide)
Enargite is related to the rare mineral wurtzite.
In enargite 75% of the zinc atoms are replaced by copper and 25% of the zinc atoms are replaced by arsenic, Cu
Unfortunately for enargite its hemimorphic character is undetectable because of its crystal form.

Lead-zinc ore is depositionally associated with pyrrhotite and is composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena and quartz, with minor pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, marcasite, tennantite, chalcopyrite, chlorite, sericite, siderite and calcite.
Enargite and enargite-tennantite ore occurs in steep veins in the vent and in a pyrite-quartz body, and also occurs in steep pipes associated with the veins in the northern portion of the pyrite-quartz body (Ward, 1961).
Luzonite, which differs in color from enargite, is found in the Cleopatra vein and in orebodies with a high gold content.

Thesis Excerpts--Tina Takagi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
From this study, it is clear that the supergene-enriched pyrite-covellite-enargite mineralization and associated acid-sulfate, high-sulfidation advanced argillic alteration was preceded by an earlier widespread protore stage of chalcopyrite-pyrite-bornite-pyrrhotite, associated with potassic alteration.
The presence of lithophile elements such as Sn and V in the enargites is attributed to Agua Rica’s metallogenic location, both on the margin of the continental craton and on the southern extension of the Bolivian tin belt.
In plan view the enargites occur in extensive east-west trending bands and are zoned: Sn-V enargites in the center, flanked by normal enargite, and then low-As enargite on the outside.

Stacking disorder and polytypism in enargite and luzonite -- Posfai and Sundberg 83 (34): 365 -- American Mineralogist
Enargite and luzonite are intergrown at the atomic level in samples from Recsk, Hungary.
The presence of defect-free luzonite and enargite indicates that both minerals grew directly from the hydrothermal solution.
The disordered structures represent transitional structural states between luzonite and enargite and probably reflect the effects of fluctuating conditions during hydrothermal deposition.

Relationships between microstructure and composition in enargite and luzonite -- Posfai and Buseck 83 (34): 373 -- ...
Coexisting enargite and famatinite and zoning in luzonite-famatinite indicate fluctuations in the Sb-content of the fluid during ore deposition.
On the other hand, assemblages of Sb-free enargite and luzonite probably reflect thermal oscillations; heavily disordered, intermediate structures may have formed near the transition temperature of low-temperature luzonite to high-temperature enargite.
Our results suggest that characteristic microstructures in enargite, luzonite, and famatinite can be useful for constraining fluid composition and temperature during ore deposition.

The two arsenic minerals most likely to have been used in the north coast production of copper-arsenic alloys are enargite and arsenopyrite; the former is a mineral found only in the high sierra of the central Andes, whereas the latter is also available in some of the north coast valleys.
No specimens of enargite have been reported thus far at Batán Grande, but this article discusses the identification of one example of enargite ore from the nearby metallurgical site of Batanes del Tablazo, in the Chancay Valley.
Inferences drawn from a single ore specimen must be made with caution, but the new data lend support to the argument that one of the main sources of supply of arsenic-bearing ores for coastal smelters was the deposits located in the highlands to the east.

Enargite is the primary copper ore in Chinkuahshih mine, therefore it is a very common mineral in Chinkuahshih mine.
However, good specimens of Enargite are only found underground.
So after closing of the mine, a good specimen of Enargite is highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
