History: Enchanted Rock State Natural Area consists of 1643.5 acres on Big Sandy Creek, north of Fredericksburg, on the border between Gillespie and Llano Counties.
Enchanted Rock was designated a National Natural Landmark in 1970 and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
It is one of the largest batholiths (underground rock formation uncovered by erosion) in the United States.

Enchanted Rock proper is but one small exposed part of this ancient batholith and is called an exfoliation dome because of the way plates of rock break away (exfoliate) from the main dome along curved joints.
The Indian legends of the haunting of Enchanted Rock were probably bolstered by the way the rock glitters on clear nights after rain, and by the creaking noises reported on cool nights after warm days.
Scientists have since theorized that the glittering is caused either by water trapped in indentations in the rock's surface or by the moon reflecting off wet feldspar, and the creaking noises by contraction of the rock's outer surface as it cools.

The rock is actually part of segmented ridge, the surface expression of a large igneous batholith of middle Precambrian material that intruded into earlier metamorphic schists and gneiss.

Both of the formations you refer to are what geologists refer to as a 'batholith' wich is formed by molten rock forming a bubble underground forced there by pressure from below and cooling.
Subsequently the earth covering this formation of rock is eroded away leaving the rock exposed for us to climb on.
I know Enchanted rock well since I lived in Austin for several years and made regular visits to the place.
