Enchanter (computer game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Enchanter is a 1983 interactive fiction computer game written by Marc Blank and Dave Lebling and published by Infocom.
It belongs to the fantasy genre and was the first fantasy game published by Infocom after the Zork trilogy (it was originally intended to be Zork IV).
This was the first game of a trilogy, usually referred to as "The Enchanter Trilogy".

In the `playfield' style arcade adventure games, or those which depend on the use of icons and mice and menus, the total number of locations in the game is often restricted, as is the richness of the game.
Some graphic games, I feel, are rather spoiled by having all possible verbs on pull-down menus, leaving little or no scope for imagination on the part of the player, and there comes a point where real-time events are happening on the screen and the game is verging on an arcade-style game, or a wargame.
Game writers should make sure that the caches of food and drink, however hard to find, are sufficient to sustain the player for a considerable proportion of the game once taken.

Enchanter; Infocom: the Steven Spielberg of text adventuring.
In Enchanter, you are a wizard third-class, chosen for a special mission specifically because of your amateur status.
Enchanter is full of the delightful little touches we have come to expect from Infocom.
But more important, Enchanter has a good sense of synergy: this is the ability of an overall narrative to become more than the sum of its parts--to totally envelope the user within it--and to build story involvement to the point at which disbelief is suspended.

Requirements: Apple Macintosh; Apple II-family computer with at least 32K RAM and a disk drive; Commodore 64 with a disk drive; or an Atari with at least 48K RAM and a disk drive.
The adventure game wizards at Infocom have just unleashed a new challenge—Enchanter, which the package blurb claims "is in the Zork tradition." That's quite a tradition to live up to, because as practically all adventure-game addicts know, Infocom's best-selling Zork trilogy set new standards for adventure game sophistication.
Saving a game in progress requires 13K, so some quick division tells you there is disk space for ten games.

Enchanter is the first game of a new spin-off from the Zork series.
Although some fans consider Enchanter simply to be the fourth installment of the Zork series, others argue that the games from the Enchanter trilogy (Enchanter, Sorcerer, Spellbreaker) should stand together as a separate epic.
Enchanter contains a design flaw that is typical of the text adventures from the Zork series—there is no way to win without dying.

The game does, however, contain code which, if I could, I would rip out, nail to a cross and hang outside the official Rand McNally-established limits of Silicon Valley in order to generate the same effect that Vlad the Impaler had by nailing gypsies, caught bandits and suspected rogues to crosses outside his borders.
Enchanter succeeds as a great story and proud part of the Zork milieu, but it's also a "snapshot" of the best work from a brilliant artist that is severely underappreciated.

Games like Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate are always labelled as RPGs but that's more to do with their AD&D heritage than any true role-playing element.
To have any chance of doing that in a computer game, you have to be able to interact with other human-controlled characters.
Access to the game is via the Microsoft Zone and at present there are six different servers running Asheron's Call, each with the same game world, but different player characters.

Almost as influential as Pac-Man in mainstreaming gaming, it was the game that exposed the potential for first-person perspective, "You are there" (or, to borrow a term from the era, "virtual reality") gaming to hundreds of thousands of people who wouldn't touch a flight sim with a 10' pole.
Many bad games (that have adequate development time and talent) end up the same way because they are so focused on 'technical' wonders, where they lose sight of pleasing the audience and fashion themselves as a type of genius designer.

Games like Infocom's Egyptian-themed Infidel, the spell-woven Enchanter series, the Cthulhu-inspired Lurking Horror or the mind manglingly hilarious Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy are still case studies of great computer game design, and game world creation and integration.
Computer role-playing games, for example, were striving not only to do the game mastering and tedious bookkeeping for the player, but to display every wound, spell, article of clothing, weapon, adversary or item, even then.
It was exactly the game people were looking for at the time, taken straight out of the first Star Wars film.

With a good mix of easy and more difficult puzzles, Enchanter is good for the beginning adventurer, though a familiarity with the Zork universe and the mapping techniques required for interactive fiction games such as this would definitely be an asset.

There is no way you?ll be able to do everything in the game with just one character, and the gameplay is vastly different among different character types, so you?ll want to play over and over just to see what life is like as a dark elven vampire enchanter or an undead-summoning Imperial archer.

Since IF games that are uploaded to the Archive will be stored indefinitely, people might be looking at this information well into the future; so we recommend that you only include a URL if your site is likely to be around for a while.
There's a tradition in computer software of using elaborate "dotted" version numbers with a multitude of sub-parts, as in "2.5.7.11.14B"; but most IF games see only a handful of releases, so a simple one-part version number ("2") is usually quite adequate.
For example, a game browser on your PC might want to contact the IF Archive to request the latest copy of a particular game; it could do this by sending the IFID to the Archive, and the Archive would know exactly which game your browser is talking about.
