Models of Education and a Catholic University   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Using MacIntyre’s Encyclopedist model of rationality, we can suppose that a curriculum constructed on such terms would be reluctant to admit any pre-theoretical commitments in its operations, i.e., a commitment to a revelatory tradition.
In such a climate, a Catholic intellectual tradition particularly suffers since it is a first principle of Encyclopedist reasoning that faith in a historical revelation is not a reasonable position.
According to MacIntyre, the impasse is broken between the Encyclopedist and Genealogist, then, with the recognition of at least one tradition of inquiry which avoids the pitfalls of those competing versions.

It is tempting to smile at this encyclopedist's apparent nafivand6, at his quaintly inaccurate notions of similitude and difference, but, as Borges reminds us, "obviously there is no classification of the universe that is not arbitrary and conjectural" (104).
My purpose in this essay is twofold: I want, like the ancient Chinese encyclopedist, to offer a taxonomy, and I want, like Borges, to keep my readers' insights on what such a taxonomy cannot do.
My taxonomy isn't so grand as one which encompasses all of the world's animals, nor does it deal with "real" objects like stray dogs or real " * imagined" objects like mermaids.

After the publication of the sixth edition of the Dictionary Ferrater Mora was not eager to prepare another edition, although for a number of reasons he was interested in seeing it kept up to date.
In the Preface to the sixth edition, he says that while he prefers his more original work to the Dictionary, he is not sorry he has spent so much time and effort on it for he thinks such a work is important for philosophy in general, and for Spanish speaking people in particular.
