19th century - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
During this century, the Spanish, Portuguese, and Ottoman empires began to crumble and the Holy Roman and Mughal empires ceased.
The start of the 19th century was also marked by a struggle between France and Britain and their allies for control of Europe and the world during the Napoleonic Wars, with Napoleon being finally defeated at Waterloo in 1815.
Furthermore, the later end of the century was dominated by what many call the New Imperialism, which was the rapid acquisition of colonies worldwide by European powers; most noteworthy is the Scramble for Africa.

While End of the Century feels a bit straggly toward the end (the rise of the Ramones is exhilarating; their slow, unfair demise is a downer), and its chronology is sometimes a little vague, the movie captures the spirit of both the band and the era they helped shape.

Outhwaite, Social Theory at the End of the Century
And even in the mid-twentieth century, the heyday of a (very diffuse) logical empiricist influence in the philosophy of social science, the most significant sociological contributions hardly fitted this image of science - as textbooks of the period in the philosophy of social science frequently lament.
It is that what we are confronting at the end of the twentieth century are essentially further modulations of modernity, confronting, perhaps, a second crisis, that of the welfare-state work society of advanced industrial civilisation which was itself in part a response to the late 19th and early 20th century crisis of the liberal polity.
A major threat to this approach lies in the attempts to revive and enforce conceptions of specialised academic professionalism and performance in a half-baked extension of a science policy which was developed in relation to 'big science' and is of dubious application in the domain of the humanities and the social sciences.

Music, rock music especially, not only defines each new generation, but ultimately becomes owned by it, something they have that links them to their peers and distances them from their parents, who are just unable to understand or connect with it, or at least that's the theory.
The Ramones, for those who do not know, were innovators, kicking against the bland pop and ten-minute solos of their mainstream contemporaries, their short tracks, simple but punchy lyrics, belting pace and aggressive guitar work proving one of the key inspirations for the punk rock movement that was shortly to explode.

The principal criticism of Zimmerli is his propensity to assign large sections of the text to the school of the prophet rather than to the prophet himself.
Neither Israel’s penitence nor Yahweh’s establishment of a new covenant is invoked by Ezekiel to explain the promise of future restoration (Schwartz proposes that in 16:59-60 YHWH transforms the existing, conditional covenant into an everlasting covenant, according to which YHWH will uphold his covenant despite the people’s actions).
