Topic: End blown

End-blown flute - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The end-blown flute is a simple woodwind instrument where the player directs air against the end of a pipe or tube.
Although the required embouchure is difficult to master — many hours of practice are required to even produce a single tone — once acquired the player can make music on even the simplest tube or pipe from a hardware store.
Unlike pan pipes, both ends of the tube are open, and unlike a recorder or tin whistle, there is no fipple.

Apparatus for blowing oriented containers - Patent 4364721
The apparatus described in claim 2 characterized by walls at both ends of the cylinder, one of the walls constituting a part of the end of the blow mold that is remote from the core rod.
The surface of the reciprocating element that contacts with the end of the parison during the blowing operation controls the shape of the center portion of the bottom of the container that is formed in the mold cavity.
Actually, the portion of the fully blown parison, which is in contact with the upper face of the element 50 during the blowing operation, is somewhat thicker than the walls of the container at other regions which expand during the blowing operation without being in contact with any other structure.

End blown flutes, include the recorder, organ pipe, ocarina, the tin whistle, and the shakuhachi.
The head end is the most difficult part to construct, because it is a long thin parabola or hyperbola (note that some editors believe there are only parabolas, others that it varies by maker and model).

The mouthpiece in all the Japanese end-blown flutes is made by first cutting the bamboo perpendicular to the pipe, usually at a node or joint of the bamboo, and then further cutting a small, wedge shaped piece from one side of the end, that is obliquely, but outwards, thus forming the blowing edge (illustration 1).
On the lower end of the bow, together with twenty-eight other figures, is a dancing man playing a wind instrument which, according to Harich-Schneider (1973:55) is "held vertically like a hichiriki (篳篥) or a shakuhachi".
The length of the instrument being played (the bottom end is nearly at waist level) and the angle at which it is being held suggest that it is a shakuhachi rather than a hichiriki, or the longer and now obsolete ôhichiriki (大篳篥).

Their tonal color is augmented by aa additional hole between the 6th fingerhole and the embouchure, which when covered by a thin membrane such as the inside of bamboo gives a buzzing element to the tone.

How I Made a Macedonian Kaval
I figured the village maker had already done the designing work at his end, so I didn't need to re-invent the wheel (or the kaval).
I'd wedge the butt end of the pipe into the metal template with little pieces of wood or cardboard, hold this down on the platform of the drill press, and then ever-so-carefully bring the drill down on each hole in the template.
Once the holes were all drilled, I'd use a little curved de-burring file by hand to smooth the outside edges of the holes on the pipes that survived that far.

The larger the hole/pipe diameter ratio, the better the approximation to an acoustic "termination" of the sound wave (ideally, an open end of a pipe), and the more closely the overblown series will be in tune.
The distances are from the blowing end to the center of the hole, in millimeters.
Forceful blowing and pulling the far end of the pipe close to your body will sharpen the pitch; blowing softly and pushing the far end of the pipe away from your body will lower it.
