Comparisons of allozyme variation of narrow endemic and widespread species of Far East Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae)
High genetic diversity in rare species is usually associated with the unique history of the species such as its recent origin from a widespread ancestor, multiple origin, hybridization, refugia origin, and ecological traits such as the ability to survive in diverse habitats (Smith and Pham, 1996; Godt and Hamrick, 1998; Gitzendanner and Soltis, 2000).
Species that resided in refugia tended to maintain high levels of genetic diversity due to population stability during the glacial cycles (Qiu and Parks, 1994; Lewis and Crawford, 1995).

This suggests that the SARS virus crossed the species barrier from civet cats; this conclusion is, however, by no means certain as it is certainly possible that the civet cats got the virus from humans and not the other way around or even that the civet cats are a sort of intermediary host.
Since both mainland China and Taiwan were epidemic of SARS at the same time, the politics across the strait inevitably complicated the way the disease was handled.
This was evidenced by one famous video clip aired widely in Taiwan about the PRC Vice Premier Wu Yi and her official company rebuffing on the question of Taiwan's representaion raised by Taiwanese reporter.

Twelve species of Eurya are known in Taiwan (Hsieh et al., 1996) and constitute an important element in forests from low to mid elevations.
This unknown species exhibits clear delimitations from all the existing species (Merrill, 1926; Kobuski, 1938; Walker, 1976; Hsieh et al., 1996; Lin, 1998; Yang et al., 1997), and, therefore, we are describing it as new to science.
