Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game & Ender's Shadow
Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow are fictional biographies.
Ender's Game is the story of Ender Wiggin, a child who is chosen to command an army in the battle against the Buggers, an alien race.
Almost 15 years and several sequels later, Card returned to the world of Ender's Game from a different perspective.

 CNN - Review: 'Ender's Shadow' - July 30, 1999
"Ender's Shadow" marks the return of Orson Scott Card to the claustrophobic, intense world of the battle school that first fascinated readers in "Ender's Game." It is entertaining, fast-paced science fiction.
In "Ender's Shadow," Card retells the tale of training and the battle, but this time through the eyes of the youngest and smallest commander, Bean.
"Ender's Shadow" is also more cynical than "Ender's Game." The men in charge not only don't have all the answers, but also -- through their secrets, manipulation and mistrust -- are harming their own goals.

Orson Scott Card - Ender Series
Like its predecessors— Enders Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets — SHADOW OF THE GIANT is filled with political intrigue, moral dilemmas and fast-paced action.
Yet there is nowhere on Earth that does not harbor his enemies, both old enemies from the days in Enders Jeesh and new enemies from the wars on Earth.
Since Ender defeated the alien enemy, the nations of earth were no longer united by a common enemy.

Although "Ender's Game" readers will know the basic outline of the plot of "Ender's Shadow," there are enough new elements and twists to keep the story fresh and exciting.

Amazon.co.uk: Books: Shadow of the Hegemon (Shadow Saga S.)
Shadow of the Hegemon lacks glittering SF hardware and seems almost old-fashioned after the planet-busting supertechnology of Ender's Game.
More recently, Ender's Shadow reworked the original tale of precocious boy soldier Ender saving the world from alien hordes at terrible personal cost, as told from the different, colder viewpoint of his even younger lieutenant Bean.
It is not on a par with Ender's Shadow or with Ender's Game, but as someone else pointed out: the story needed telling, and it is great to read.

Steven Wu's Book Reviews: Shadow of the Hegemon (Orson Scott Card)
But the biggest problem with Shadow of the Hegemon is that it is essentially a political thriller, with none of the imaginative elements that made Ender's Game (and Speaker of the Dead) so wonderful.
As with Ender's Shadow, Shadow of the Hegemon is an easy-to-read yarn that quickly lost my interest.
The second chapter of Ender's Game alone, when Peter nearly kills Ender and then cries by Ender's side afterward, still sends chills down my back; no scene with Peter in Shadow of the Hegemon made him out to be anything other than another plot device.

Kliatt: Shadow of the Hegemon - Audiobook Review
Taking up the Ender saga after Ender's Game (1985), Speaker for the Dead (1986), and Ender's Shadow (1999), Shadow of the Hegemon continues the story of Bean, previously Ender's second-in-command and an amazing young man. The bugger war is over but peace is interrupted when the young soldiers of the Batrtle School are abducted.
Bean is forced to enlist the help of the politically savvy Peter Wiggin (Ender's brother who yearns to be the ruler, the Hegemon) and together they attempt to thwart Achilles, and save their friends and the world.
The kidnapper is Achilles, a psychopath who plans to rule the world with the help of the Battle School students.

 Excessive Candour
The ultimate failure of Ender's Shadow does not lie in the occasional failure in the cunning of its telling, moments when (for instance) the inevitability of Bean's shadowing-in-advance of the original story become very nearly tedious; the ultimate failure is a failure of philosophy.
And the book itself is a shadow of its famous predecessor, the novel that signalized Card's irruption into the world of SF.
It is fun to have Ender's Shadow; but it would be very much less fun to live in the shadow its heroes would impose upon a real world.
