  Laboratory 8: Peripheral Nervous System
Distinguish the endoneurium, perineurium and epineurium of a peripheral nerve.
The numerous nuclei present are either Schwann cells or fibroblasts of the endoneurium.
The eosinophilic staining between nerve fibers is due to the cytoplasm of the Schwann cells and cells of the endoneurium.

INTRODUCTION TO PERIPHERAL NERVES   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
The endoneurium consists of fibroblasts with processes that disseminate through the fascicles between nerve fibers and Schwann cells.
The collagen fibers observed in the endoneurium tend to be longitudinal and often are closely apposed to the Schwann cells.
The capillaries in the endoneurium have tight junctions and form the blood-nerve barrier similar to the type of barrier seen within the brain.

 Artículo 1
A bundle of nerve fibers together with their endoneurium is again surrounded by connective tissue and this is refered to as a fascicle.
The numerous fascicles of each nerve are arranged into groups of fascicles, changing their arrangement of distribution from central levels to the periphery.
If the fascicles themselves remain fibrotic due to scarred endoneurium rather easily palpable between two finger tips one must decide if resection of the neuromatous segment and nerve grafting should be performed.

Endoneurium begins at the outside of the axonal membrane and ends with the more dense perineurium.
Endoneurium is loose connective tissue made up of collagen, capillaries, macrophages, fibroblasts, and extracellular fluid.
And of course, the endoneurium sheaths and individual axons are not visible at this magnification.

IX. Neurology. 1. Structure of the Nervous System. Gray, Henry. 1918. Anatomy of the Human Body.
The tubular sheath of the funiculi (perineurium) is a fine, smooth, transparent membrane, which may be easily separated, in the form of a tube, from the fibers it encloses; in structure it is made up of connective tissue, which has a distinctly lamellar arrangement.
The nerve fibers are held together and supported within the funiculus by delicate connective tissue, called the endoneurium.
It is continuous with septa which pass inward from the innermost layer of the perineurium, and shows a ground substance in which are imbedded fine bundles of fibrous connective tissue running for the most part longitudinally.

 A&P 2 Lab page 7
A nerve is a bundle of neuron fibers or processes wrapped in connective tissue coverings that extends to and/or from the CNS and visceral organs or structures of the body periphery (such as skeletal muscles, glands, and skin).
Within a nerve, each fiber is surrounded by a delicate connective tissue sheath called an endoneurium, which insulates it from the other neuron processes adjacent to it.
(The endoneurium is often mistaken for the myelin sheath; it is instead an additional sheath that surrounds the myelin sheath.) Groups of fibers are bound by a coarser connective tissue, called the perineurium, to form bundles of fibers called fascicles.

Sentence 11: The endoneurium surrounds each fiber, the perineurium binds groups of fibers together into fascicles, or bundles, and the epineurium covers the whole nerve.
This is the third sentence of the second paragraph of this two-paragraph excerpt from Human Anatomy and Physiology by Joan G. Creager, and it is the eleventh sentence overall in this excerpt.
The independent clauses are “The endoneurium surrounds each fiber,” “the perineurium binds groups of fibers together into fascicles, or bundles,” “the epineurium covers the whole nerve.” The subject-verb combinations are respectively “endoneurium surrounds,” “perineurium binds,” and “epineurium covers.”

Neuropathology 2000: Poster Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Results: Only the outer border zone of the endoneurium (below the removed perineurium) showed obvious morphological changes while the inner part the endoneurium (60-70% of the total area) appeared intact.
The most remarkable change was the appearance of a marked minifascicle-like reaction in the border zone of the endoneurium 14 d.
This study shows that despite the removal of peri- and epineurium, the inner part of endoneurium stays intact, probably due to the combined effect of protective endoneurial reactions and internal vascularization.
