This Nauvoo endowment, is a ritual consisting of highly symbolic acts and covenants designed to endow initiates with priesthood power, and to prepare them for their ascent into heaven after their resurrection, if they remained faithful.
This form of the Endowment is practiced mainly by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and related sects.
As part of the Endowment ceremony, the ordinance of washing and anointing symbolizes the ritual cleansing of priests that took place at Israel's Tabernacle, the temple of Solomon, and later temples in Jerusalem (See Exodus 28:40-42, Exodus 29:4-9, 20-21 29-30, 30:18-21).

Those who are living go to the temple to receive their personal endowment, which consists of making sacred covenants, or promises, between God and themselves.
Temple marriages are performed by men holding the priesthood, or power of God, which allows them to bind marriages for not only this life but for the life after as well.
After members have received their personal endowment they can act as proxy for their ancestors and others who have died to receive their own endowments.

The altar is a sacral edifice in Mormonsim.
It also seems a short step to draw the connection and see this as what the Endowment is trying to teach, especially with everyone constantly admonishing you to ponder the Temple and try to figure out what it means to you, and talking about how great the teachings there are.
I assume that the altar was to be used mainly by those families where the parents had received their endowments.

I was a Mormon for five years before I found the whole thing to be a fraud.
I live within blocks of the Oakland Temple, but took out my own endowments at SLC Temple back in the days when they still had live "sessions".
I am truely greatful for your ministry, it has been a great help to me in learning about mormonsim.
