  Endplay
The excessive endplay isn't so much the fault of the bearings themselves (though they may cause some of it), but more the engine case -- the bearing holders in the case, and areas like that.
There are three thin shims at the flywheel end which are used to adjust the endplay, and this would be done if you completely rebuild the engine.
The trail of discovery to this problem is interesting -- first the clutch slipping, which was caused by oil getting by the main seal, which in turn was damaged by the excessive endplay due to a spun bearing.

Endplay is the measure of free movement of the tire and wheel assembly along the spindle axis.
Set up the instrument so the plunger is against the end of the spindle, approximately parallel to its axis.To test endplay, grab the wheel assembly with one hand at the three o'clock position and the other at the nine o'clock position.
Then reassemble and retorque the outer nut.If endplay is not present, remove the outer nut and loosen the inner nut to the next alignment hole.

  Science Fair Projects - Endplay
An endplay, in bridge and similar games, is a tactical play where a defender is put on lead at a strategic moment, and then has to make a play that loses one or more tricks.
In a case where declarer has no entries to dummy (or to his own hand), the defender may also be endplayed into leading a suit which can be won in that hand.
If the adverse spades are divided 2-1, there are 12 certain tricks (6 spade tricks, 2 hearts, 1 diamond, 3 clubs) and the possibility of a 13th by correctly guessing the two-way finesse (or dropping the queen) in hearts.

The endplay of the cam should be minimal, as the movement of the cam back and forth during engine operation changes the way the gears mesh between the cam and distributor, which alters the total ignition timing in the engine.
To set the cam endplay, the end plate on the two-piece cover for the Jesel beltdrive is installed with various shims.
On our MSD distributors, we set the endplay at 0.008 to 0.010 inch, using various shims between the housing and a 0.006-inch bigger od bronze gear pinned to the end of the shaft, to reduce the amount of clearance between the distributor and cam gear.

 Adjusting tapered bearings
The optimal initial endplay depends on a number of factors, including shaft and housing materials, bearing fits, and operating temperatures.
Endplay adjustments in tapered roller bearings are made during assembly or installation to compensate for the expected thermal expansion during operation and system deflections.
Axial preload in tapered roller bearings is produced by displacing one bearing ring axially in relation to the other by an amount corresponding to the desired preload force.

Endplay is the last gap to set on the Centax-2 or Centax-3 clutch.
Endplay is adjusted independently of clutch gap, and it is the amount that the clutchbell slides on the crankshaft with all internal bearings installed.
Endplay on the Centax-2 or Centax-3 clutch is adjusted by using very small shims ON THE CRANKSHAFT IN FRONT OF THE FLYWHEEL NUT (holding the flywheel onto the crankshaft).

 Endplays
Most endplays involve a tenace, an honor holding with which declarer may gain a trick if the suit is led by an opponent.
Another way to execute an endplay is to put an opponent on lead in one suit and force him to lead another suit in which you hold a tenace — else he must give you a ruff and discard.
An endplay might still be possible if declarer has adequate trump length, but in this case the only chance is to force an opponent to surrender a ruff and discard.
