  'Enemies A Love Story'
Enemies, A Love Story," Paul Mazursky's soulful adaptation of the Isaac Bashevis Singer novel, has a spirit that's nearly impossible to describe -- a kind of robust, almost lusty fatalism.
In "Enemies," Mazursky is both comedian and philosopher, and his shrugging man is Herman, a Polish refugee who, during the war, was hidden away from the Nazis in a hayloft.
The story he presents to his naive wife, who still behaves as if she were his servant, is that he is a traveling bookseller, off constantly on trips to the wilds of Pittsburgh and Baltimore.

"Enemies, a Love Story" is a movie about a man who ends up being married to three women at the same time, and it should not surprise you that he is not a happy man. He is not surprised.
Paul Mazursky's "Enemies, a Love Story," based on the novel by Isaac Bashevis Singer, contains the clue to this story in its title.
"Enemies, a Love Story" is such an intriguing film because it refuses to be tamed, to settle down into a nice, comforting parable with a lesson to teach us.

Paul Mazursky's Enemies, A Love Story
Herman Broder's love is fractured, split, fragmented, as he himself is. His love for Jedwiga is governed by the debt of guilt - a Schuld or debt-guilt that he cannot repay.
His love for Masha is an obsession guided by the passion for a lost, eroticized mother, for an ecstatic pleasure that would extinguish his horrible memories and erase the trauma of the loss of his family.
Finally, the love of his wife gradually turns into a friendship where real compassion and understanding become possible, but only at the expense of excluding any real committment; as his "advisor" or "manager," she can counsel him regarding the proper response to his other relationships, but she cannot really be with him.

 Babelguides: Enemies: A Love Story
Enemies is the story of Herman Broder, a survivor who has fled to post-war New York and married his former servant Yadwiga, a Polish peasant who hid him in her hayloft during the war.
The tension between the novel’s title and subtitle — a ’love story’ about ’enemies’ — goes some way to indicate the instability of the emotional lives of survivors.
Love, the book seems to suggest, can never be uncomplicated after the experience of the Holocaust, because the faith and trust that makes love possible has been shattered.

 Enemies, a Love Story (1989)
That's the quandary at the heart of Enemies, a Love Story, a thoughtful, superbly acted period dramedy in which director Paul Mazursky takes a premise that could easily veer into Three's Company territory and turns it into a heart-wrenching exploration of love, commitment, and courage.
With its focus on complex dialogue and rich, complicated characters, Enemies, a Love Story — while occasionally rambling and difficult to follow — is every inch an actor's movie, and Mazursky delivers the goods with his talented cast.
Not that Mazursky takes much of the credit — in his commentary track on Warner's Enemies DVD, the veteran director (An Unmarried Woman, Moon Over Parador) is quick to praise his actors (as well as everyone else involved in making the movie) for their talent and skill.

 'Enemies A Love Story'
Enemies, A Love Story" doesn't ask a lot, just that you be in the mood for lighthearted, ethnic farce because, if you're ready, Paul Mazursky has a delicately involving experience for you.
Cinematographer Fred Murphy makes the images warm and sentimental -- this is postwar New York, freedom citadel for Jewish immigrants -- and Maurice Jarre's klezmer-influenced (and strategically inserted) score provides a lilting undertone.
What's most important for Mazursky, though, is that he's drawn enough from the book to give "Enemies" warm appeal and his career a much needed, subtle boost.
