Topic: Energumens

SUMMA THEOLOGICA: Should exorcism precede Baptism?
For exorcism is ordained against energumens or those who are possessed.
The energumens are so-called from "laboring inwardly" under the outward operation of the devil.
And though not all that approach Baptism are troubled by him in their bodies, yet all who are not baptized are subject to the power of the demons, at least on account of the guilt of original sin.

Energumens are giant, beautiful (as Cybele was beautiful), and live for only 1000 days.
In a sense, the energumens are all the same fifteen-year old girl, who longs for nothing more than to be reunited with Father.
The novel begins and ends with one energumen's quest to find her long-dead Father, and Hand does not disappoint.

 The Catholic Encyclopedia - Exorcist
That catechumens were exorcised every day, for some time before baptism, may be inferred from canon of the same council, which prescribed the daily imposition of hands by the exorcists.
A further duty is precribed in canon 92, viz: to supply food to, and in a general way to care for, energumens who habitually frequented the Church.
There is no mention of pagan energumens, for the obvious reason that the official ministrations of the Church were not intended for them.

Objection 2: Further, among those who have not the use of reason are the possessed, who are called energumens.
Reply to Objection 2: Dionysius is speaking there of energumens who are not yet baptized, in whom the devil's power is not yet extinct, since it thrives in them through the presence of original sin.
But as to baptized persons who are vexed in body by unclean spirits, the same reason holds good of them as of others who are demented.

But catechumens who are instructed by catechism, and "energumens" who are cleansed by exorcism, are counted among the unclean, as Dionysius says in the same place.
Therefore to catechize and to exorcize do not belong to the office of the priests, but rather to that of the ministers.
Objection 3: Further, "to catechize" is the same as "to teach," and this is the same as "to perfect." Now this belongs to the office of a bishop, as Dionysius says (Eccl.

The assassins of duke François de Guise, of William, prince of Orange, of king Henry III and king Henry IV, and so many others, were energumens suffering from the same madness as Diaz.
The most detestable example of fanaticism is that of the bourgeois of Paris who hastened in saint Bartholomew's night to assassinate, butcher, throw out of the windows, cut in pieces their fellow citizens who did not go to mass.

John Hawkins has done such research and the results are very interesting.
In those early days the narthex could contain catechumens, energumens (demoniacs and others possessed of abnormal mental and physical states or afflicted with un- clean spirits), penitents, Jews, heathens, heretics, schismatics, corpses during funeral rites and, oh yes, women!
Besides John’s research, I found on a quick trawl through the net that there are many references to narthex, and the closing comments of the one from the Catholic Dictionary seems to summarise my feelings very well....

Demonic possession - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema
Hysteria is the first step to all other diseases previously mentioned, and it is more common in women than in men, thus the number of "demon-possessed" people and accusers was higher in women than in men; so it was the number of people killed by those accusations too.
Medicine can explain some aspects of the "symptoms" shown by those persons allegedly possessed; it is known that "supernatural strength" is common in some cases of insanity (maniacs, energumens, etc.).
The theme of demon possession has been by far better exploited by cinema than literature.
