Electronic band structure - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The uppermost occupied band in an insulator or semiconductor is called the valence band by analogy to the valence electrons of individual atoms.
Because one of the main mechanisms for electrons to be excited to the conduction band is due to thermal energy, the conductivity of semiconductors is strongly dependent on the temperature of the material.
This band gap is one of the most useful aspects of the band structure, as it strongly influences the electrical and optical properties of the material.

 Band Theory for Solids
Instead of having discrete energies as in the case of free atoms, the available energy states form bands.
In insulators the electrons in the valence band are separated by a large gap from the conduction band, in conductors like metals the valence band overlaps the conduction band, and in semiconductors there is a small enough gap between the valence and conduction bands that thermal or other excitations can bridge the gap.
Most solid substances are insulators, and in terms of the band theory of solids this implies that there is a large forbidden gap between the energies of the valence electrons and the energy at which the electrons can move freely through the material (the conduction band).

 Energy bands
The energy is plotted as a function of the wavenumber, k, along the main crystallographic directions in the crystal, since the band diagram depends on the direction in the crystal.
An important feature of an energy band diagram, which is not included on the simplified diagram, is whether the conduction band minimum and the valence band maximum occur at the same value for the wavenumber.
The energy bandgap of semiconductors tends to decrease as the temperature is increased.

The lowest energy of CB is called the conduction band edge, denoted as Ec, and is equal to the top of energy gap; and the highest energy of VB is called the valence band egde, denoted as Ev, and is equal to the bottom of energy gap.
This, in the energy band terms, means that a valence electron (in VB, localized and not mobile) is thermally excited into the CB (where the electron is mobile), leaving behind an unoccupied state in the valence band.
Charge Carriers in Energy Bands of Extrinsic Semiconductor – The relative concentration of electrons and holes in a semiconductor is controlled by the kind and concentration of chemical impurity atoms that are intentionally introduced (or doped) into the material during or after the crystal growth.

Energy scavengers produce electrical energy as long as they are in an environment with vibrations, such as buildings, transportation systems, industrial equipment, or other vibration generating environment.
Input mechanical energy is received along at least one range of motion, causing a mass to oscillate in the at least one mode of oscillation.
A portion of kinetic energy of the oscillations of the mass in the at least one mode of oscillation is converted into oscillations of the mass in a second, different mode of oscillation, causing the mass to simultaneously oscillate in two separate modes of oscillation.

The measured energy bands of indium atomic wires in the metallic state (left) and in the insulating state at 45 K (right).
Bands are indicated by bright regions of higher photoemission intensity.
The team found that in the insulating state below 125 K, the expected band-gap opening of the half-filled band was accompanied by a restructuring in which the band with the smallest filling disappeared, owing to an interband interaction in which the electrons of the disappearing band transferred into the third band, which became half filled.

 2.2.3 Energy bands
Energy bands occur in solids where the discreet energy levels of the individual atoms merge into bands which contain a large number of closely spaced energy levels.
Empty bands do not contain electrons and therefore are not expected to contribute to the electrical conductivity of the material.
We will call the almost full band the valence band since it is occupied by valence electrons and the almost empty band will be called the conduction band as electrons are free to move in this band and contribute to the conduction of the material.

(Note that the energy bands are a property of the solid as a whole, not of the individual atoms within the solid.) [P11.4]
is formed: from an energy level for the electrons in individual atoms, which becomes split and broadened by the influence of other nearby atoms in the solid.
is usually separated: from other bands, just as the individual electron energy level from which it is derived is separated from other energy levels (though it is also possible for different bands to overlap).

 Tensen Physics Dictionary (B)
Electrons in the conduction band are loosely bound to the atoms and can generally be thought of as bound to the material rather than to an atom.
The energy levels tend to adjust into separated groups of energy levels called "energy bands." This is not inherently a spacial separation; rather it is a difference in the energy values which are available to the electrons.
It was first mathematically modeled by Planck with the claim that the energy in the absorbed light was quantized.

Band gap energy measurements for silicon and germanium diodes
Majority carriers consist of electrons (in the conduction band) that travel from the n to the p side and holes (vacancies in the valence band) that travel from the p to the n side.
The band gap energies were found to be 1.14 eV and 0.77 eV.
First, the energy (electrical or thermal) needed to transfer an electron from the valence band to the conducting band for the silicon diode is approximately twice that of the germanium diode.

Dave Nichols: Maximum energy traveltimes calculated in the seismic frequency band Maximum energy traveltimes
The method estimates a traveltime that is valid in the seismic frequency band, not the usual high frequency approximation.
A simple way of estimating a traveltime that is valid in the seismic frequency band is to compute the full wavefield and then pick the maximum energy arrival at each location.
The estimate made in the seismic frequency band is much smoother and it does not show any of the instability associated with caustics that can cause problems when using ray traced Green's functions.

Help: How to interpret energy band?
As we all known, energy band is very important to everyone who want to go longer in physics, especially in condensed matter physics.
To be able to decipher any band structure, you first need to know AND have in front of you the crystal structure of the material, or more specifically, the reciprocal structure of the material, preferably the 1st Brillouin zone.
However, when I want to calculate band structure of some simple material, it seems too hard and I am frustrated at the first step: how to build a unit cell of a kind of concrete material which can be used in a program, for example, Gaussian.

The Energy Band Model - Material Classification   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
We can say that the width of the band gap is very large, since it requires that much energy to traverse the band gap, and draw the band diagram respectively.
This may be because of its narrow or nonexistent band gap, the conduction band may be overlapping the valence band so they share the electrons.
The band gap is wide enough to where current is not going through it at all times, but narrow enough to where it does not take a lot of energy to have electrons in the conduction band creating a current.
