Enfield Southgate is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.
Enfield Southgate had always been regarded as an ultra-safe Conservative seat, up until 1997, it had never had an MP of any other party than the Conservatives in its entire history.
Enfield Southgate gained especial attention in the 1997 general election when the Secretary of State for Defence Michael Portillo was unexpectedly defeated on a massive swing.

The parliamentary constituency covering the part of Southgate in the London Borough of Enfield is Enfield Southgate.
Southgate was originally the South Gate to Enfield Chase, the King's hunting grounds.
In 1933, the North Circular Road was completed through Edmonton and Southgate, and also in 1933, the London Underground Piccadilly Line was extended from Arnos Grove (where it had reached the previous year), through Southgate tube station, on to Enfield West (now known as Oakwood).

I live in Enfield Southgate and Twigg is the only candidate who is making an effort, it is hard to see who is a Tory voter in London these days and I predict Twigg will hold the seat quite comfortably.
Enfield Southgate will be a symbol of the Tories' bad performance in London in 2001, just as it was in 1997.
Stephen Twigg has worked the constituency well and is very popular, by contrast the Tories have picked a rural-based candidate whose manner and prejudices are completely out of keeping with suburban London.

The constituency of Enfield Southgate rose to prominence when Labour challenger Stephen Twigg defeated Defence Secretary Michael Portillo in 1997.
Born in Southgate in 1966 to parents who were Communists, he attended Southgate Comprehensive and Balliol College, Oxford, became president of the NUS, was elected to Islington Council, became researcher to the former Islington council leader Margaret Hodge, MP, and ran the Fabians for a year before his own election.
John Flack, 43 was selected as the local Conservative Spokesman for Enfield Southgate in December 1999.

It is too early to calculate how a Westminster parliament would look on the basis of Thursday’s nights results if it was elected by PR — but campaigners say that Mr Blair’s 2001 majority of 166 would have been reduced to 80 if an alternative vote system had been in place.
Even those predicting a bad Labour showing in London would - wrongly - have said that Stephen Twigg would be fine in Enfield Southgate, but - just as wrongly - that the MPs in the Enfield North and Finchley and Golders Green seats would be toast.
Not that startling an observation; as he took to the stage Labour were standing at 320 seats - just four short of a majority - and as he left it, Labour were on 323, just one short (and by the time this post was finished, they had made finishing line).
