 Engelmann's Theory of Instruction
Engelmann and Carnine argue that a theory of instruction ought to be based upon a scientific analysis.
Engelmann and Carnine say, metaphorically, that the mechanism "makes up a rule" using positive and negative examples of a quality, and "classifies" new examples as positive or negative on the basis of this rule.
From the Engelmann perspective, we judge if a communication is faultless or not solely on the basis of the structure of the communication and without regard to the behavior of the learner.

 Engelmann Oak Annual Report
Engelmann oaks are only found in southern California and the northern portions of Baja California, with more than 90% of the remaining stands located in San Diego County (Pavlick, et al, 2002).
Most Engelmann oak woodlands occur between 700 and 1300 meters (2300-4200 feet) and are usually found on southwest facing slopes and mesas dominated by grasslands or coastal sage scrub vegetation (St. John and Scott, 1997).
Engelmann oaks are often found in soil that is deep loamy clay, however they can also grow in sandy or rocky soils if there is some source of summer moisture such as a perennial or intermittent stream (Pavlick, et.

Severance of the cardiaca nerves in virgins removes the inhibition of the corpora allata by the brain and mimics the stimulatory effect of normal mating (Engelmann, 1957, 1960).
The latter effect is not detectable in the early nymphal instars.
However, this effect may not have been the result of a direct stimulation of the prothoracic glands but rather was the effect of the production of a hemolymph factor (not the prothoracicotropic hormone) which in turn stimulated the prothoracic glands.

The influence of light on winter stomatal conductance
The role of stomatal conductance in winter desiccation was examined by observing the effects of light exposure on leaf conductance of excised shoots of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii (Parry) Engelm.) and bristlecone pine (Pinus aristata Engelm.) collected during the winter.
Twenty Engelmann spruce and 16 bristlecone pine trees were chosen and a branch large enough to provide four sample shoot tips was selected from the southern aspect of each tree on each sample date.
Engelmann spruce collections took place on four dates: 8 January, 14 February, 26 March, and 12 May. Bristlecone pine samples were collected three times throughout the season: 14 February, 26 March, and 12 May. Specimens were treated in the laboratory within 5 h of collection.

Engelmann is often more expensive than Sitka due to the lower yield from its smaller logs and because most logs have a spiral-grained structure that renders them unsuitable for proper quarter-sawing.
Engelmann is considerably lighter in color than Sitka spruce, lighter in weight, and usually less stiff, resulting in a slightly lower velocity of sound.
Engelmann also tends to exhibit a weaker fundamental tone, although it produces a noticeably broader and stronger overtone component.

The Effect of Family Literacy Interventions On Children's Acquisition of Reading
The effects of maturation are not zeroed out in the pre-/posttest design without a control group, and so these effects are almost always higher and are simply not comparable with the effect sizes that are used for the analyses reported here.
Meta-analytic procedures provide a test of the overall effect of parent involvement on children's literacy as well as a test of similarity in the size of the effects across studies (that is, a test of homogeneity).
The effect size index selected in the present analysis was Cohen's d, a standardized measure of the difference between the performance of the children in the intervention group and those in the control group.
