Motor oil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
As the temperature increases, the viscosity of the oil decreases logarithmically in a relatively predictable manner.
Engine oil is used for the lubrication, cooling, and cleaning of internal combustion engines.
Motor oil may be composed of a lubricant base stock only in the case of non-detergent oil, or a lubricant base stock plus additives to improve the oil's detergency, extreme pressure performance, and ability to inhibit corrosion of engine parts.

Engine Oil Choices - MiniMopar Resources
Engines need a thin oil at startup, so that it can get to the engine components quickly, but it needs a thicker oil when the engine is hot because a thin oil becomes too thin.
Differences between conventional oils usually lies within the purification process of the base oil and the additives that are included to control it.
The difference is that the base oil is synthesized so that the size of the molecules are ideal for a particular weight and are of consistent size.

 Car Engine Oil
For instance, SAE 20 (a relatively light oil) was used during the winter months to ensure that the oil could be pumped easily to critical engine parts, even in very cold start up conditions.
In effect, multigrade oils could be run all the year round as there was no need to change the oil viscosity to suit the season.
A good quality motor oil will typically consist of 80% base oil blended with 20% complex chemical additives, whose purpose it is to improve the performance of the base oil itself and to protect the metal surfaces within the engine.

 Engine Oil Filters
Engine oil filter have one purpose in life: to filter out the particles that enter the oil so that they don't act as abrasives when the oil recirculates.
This prevents engine oil starvation and the possibility of destroying the element, allowing pieces of it and the junk it filtered to enter the engine.
The oil passge to the head became blocked and the head got so hot from oil starvation that it actually melted the vacuum lines connected to it as well as the wires near it.

Oil the rocker arm pins, and the pins of the governor carrying the governor spring.
While the engine is coasting to a stop, turn the crank handle of the oiler a few revolutions so that the piston and cylinder will be nicely bathed in oil for the period the engine is standing idle.
If the engine has been operating at a considerable load, with water in the cap jacket, and the load is then reduced to a point where normally no water is needed in the cap jacket, it is well to drain it to obtain the best operation at the light load.

 [No title]
As jet engines were developed after the war, it soon became evident that conventional lubricating oils couldn't withstand the high temperatures and pressures, and synthetics came to be used in all military commercial jet aircraft engines.
Thus the more the additive content in an oil, the less lubrication is available to the engine; and (2) Most additives tend to volatilize (evaporate) and deteriorate with heat and age and use, so that the overall effectiveness of the lubricant itself is significantly diminished within only a few thousand miles of driving.
Following the year-long demonstration, each of the engines was disassembled, both to determine the levels of sludge, varnish, and rust that had accumulated inside the engine, and to carefully measure the amounts of wear experienced on critical engine components.

 AMSOIL - Engine Fogging Oil
Most two- and four-stroke motor oils are formulated to have an affinity to engine component surfaces, acting as a barrier that keeps condensate from contacting engine components and forming corrosion.
One method involves placing motor oil directly on internal engine components, usually by pouring one or two ounces of oil into the engine cylinders through the spark plug holes and manually rotating the engine to distribute the oil.
AMSOIL Engine Fogging Oil applications include, but are not limited to, motorcycles, snowmobiles, ATV’s, outboard motors, stern drive and inboard marine engines, personal watercraft, lawn equipment, chainsaws, snowblowers, portable generators, hand held power equipment, motor scooters, powered farm equipment, powered construction equipment, cars and trucks.

 GM'S Change Engine Oil Light
Petroleum oil companies have insisted that their oil needs to be changed every 3000 miles, even for these vehicles with the dashboard light.
Instead, the GM Oil Life System analyzes the engine's operational data including temperature, revolutions and speed, to calculate the rate of engine oil degradation and determine when an oil is nearing the end of its life.

Read on to learn how passenger car motor oils are classified in terms of their performance and their viscosity and you will be able to choose the correct choice of engine oil for your vehicle to achieve the maximum life from the engine.
As the temperature of an oil increases its viscosity decreases.
Typically, oil 1 would be referred to as a multigrade oil, and oil 2 as a monograde oil.

Synthetic oils don't get hot enough to make use of the synthetics high stability, and the long lasting properties of synthetics are wasted on a VW engine, since most of them have no filter and you HAVE to change the oil every 3000 miles to keep it clean anyway.
VW engines are designed to burn a bit of oil, too, so most Beetles need a pint or so about half way between oil changes to keep it near the full mark.
If the oil is real low it tends to get hotter (less time to cool down in the sump), and of course if it runs out, the engine will survive for a short time as it gets hotter and hotter.

The Engine Oil Bible : Additives
My views on engine oil additives are this: the oil companies spend hundreds of millions on research and development in order to make their oils suitable for use in car engines.
The oil sticks to the engine parts when the engine is turned off, and is theoretically still there, ready to protect, when you next turn the engine on.
Oil, on the other hand, is a weakly polar substance because the electrons are mostly evenly "shared".

This could allow oil from the clean side of the filter to seep back into the oil pan, but it wouldn't allow the dirty oil in the filter to seep back.
Oil that is in the main gallery usually leaks out through the main bearings anyway while the engine sits.
The telltale signs for an AC Delco filter are: Five large holes for the oil inlet and 6 spot welds on the rim surrounding them.

The higher cost of synthetic oil is said to be offset by longer mileage intervals between oil changes.
In fact, since oil changes represent a relatively small portion of the time devoted to preventive maintenance inspections, a change in how often they need to be done doesn't have much impact on vehicle downtime.
A decrease in the number of oil changes related to use of synthetic oil will probably not actually impact vehicle downtime since the vehicle may be coming in for preventive maintenance work related to other parts.
