Independence is powered by two large reliable G.M. 8V71 N diesel engines that produce 320 horsepower each and since their introduction in 1938 have become well known for their durability and safety.
Engine starting power is supplied by a separate bank of four, 8D 8-volt DC lead and acid batteries arranged in 32-volt DC configuration.

As on the berth deck, all lighting in the engineering areas was artificial, and the iron walls bore white paint to reflect what little light there was.
The vibrating side-lever engine allowed rotation of the propeller shaft to be applied at a 90-degree angle to the main cylinder, while the horizontal design of the cylinders enabled Ericsson to place all of the machinery low in the hull below waterline and behind the Monitor's protective armor.

A tail clutch and an engine clutch enabled either the engine or the motor to drive the propeller; or, alternatively, the motor could be used as a generator to recharge the main battery, with or without turning the propeller, or to float the load.
Exhaust gases from the engines on the surface were passed outboard through muffler tanks at water level; but when snorting the gases had to be taken up through an exhaust mast whose open end was a few feet below the surface.
There was always a partial vacuum throughout the submarine when snorting because the engines inevitably drew air from inside the boat as well as down through the snort mast; there were strict limitations on the amount of vacuum permitted as well as on other conditions involving crew and engine safety.
