  ASEE PRISM - Sep 1999 - Pro/Con - Should we mandate the master’s?
The master's degree as the first professional degree for engineers is an idea that has come and gone many times in the profession's history.
The for and against line is not drawn squarely between the "producers" and "consumers" of engineering graduates, and industry and academe often agree (to different extents) on both the practical difficulties and the ideological benefits.
I firmly believe that all engineering disciplines would need to be involved, and that there needs to be compromise on the part of the proponents and opponents—such as reducing the current required credits for a master's.

Answer: Engineering is the application of the laws of math and discoveries of science to the universe?s natural resources for the betterment of mankind.
Answer: Engineering Ethics is a more moral code, with its primary focus on the public health, safety, and welfare; as opposed to those of law and medicine which put primary focus on the interests of the practitioner?s client/patient.
Engineering has, more than other professions, been more involved, simultaneously, in the creation of mankind's common "built environment" and in the creation of means to destroy it.

Engineer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Engineers and scientists are often confused in the minds of the general public.
In the U.S., the term "engineer" is also used to denote an operator of an engine of some sort, e.g., a railroad engineer denotes the operator of a locomotive, a ship's engineer denotes the operator of the steam engine on a steamship, and a stationary engineer is normally responsible for a stationary steam engine.
Yet another kind of engineer is a military engineer, who is member of any branch of the armed forces responsible for the design and construction and the also the destruction of offensive, defensive and logistical structures for warfare.

Mechanical engineering - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The total number of mechanical engineering jobs in 2004 was projected to grow 9 to 17%, with average starting salaries being $50,236 with a bachelors degree, $59,880 with a masters degree, and $68,299 with a doctorate degree.
Typically, engineering mechanics is used to analyze and predict the acceleration and deformation (both elastic and plastic) of objects under known forces (also called loads) or stresses.
Optionally, an engineer may also manually manufacture a part using the technical drawings, but this is becoming an increasing rarity, except in the areas of applied spray coatings, finishes, and other processes that cannot economically be done by a machine.

 Embedded.com - Advanced degrees
Maybe the "requirement" to obtain that ME degree is more due to agressive advertising by the schools as opposed to being driven by any need from industry, or desire from the students.
A higher degree is a method to obtain knowledge and it is up to the individual to use is wisely.
Engineering is a skill/personal attribute that sometimes can't be learned in school.

 ASEE PRISM - Mar 2000 - Re-Engineering in Germany
Engineering enrollments were up 2.5 percent in each of the past two years.
Even during that period of high unemployment, engineering jobs were available in fast-growing sectors like telecommunications, computers, and electronics—but few engineers could make the transition, so entrenched were they in their previous vocations.
As the need to move more engineers into developing industries grows stronger, it's expected that even smaller companies will come to appreciate an engineering workforce that is more mobile and not so anchored to one industry.

 Engineers
Engineering technology graduates, however, are not qualified to register as professional engineers under the same terms as graduates with degrees in engineering.
About 555,000 engineering jobs were found in manufacturing industries, and another 378,000 wage and salary jobs were in the professional, scientific, and technical services sector, primarily in architectural, engineering, and related services and in scientific research and development services.
It is important for engineers, as it is for those working in other technical and scientific occupations, to continue their education throughout their careers because much of their value to their employer depends on their knowledge of the latest technology.

EducationGuardian.co.uk | Choose a degree | Wanted: engineers who are civil
While other universities continue to train civil engineers to design and construct roads, bridges, tunnels and docks, UCL is taking a radical new approach to its October 2006 degree courses, including modifying the entry requirements so that high grades at maths and physics at A-level are no longer required.
Caroline Fitzpatrick, head of the environmental engineering group, admits it is a gamble: the department has no idea how its 2006 degrees will go down in a deeply traditional world where many of the prospective undergraduates are the sons of civil engineers.
Hardly a typical civil engineer by background, but it was her ability that counted.

Geek.com Geek News - Engineers without a degree   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
When the twenty-two percent without bachelor's degrees is broken down further, the data shows that 40% are employed in computer and math science occupations, 20% in engineering occupations, 10% each in life and social sciences, and 7% in physical sciences.
Degrees used to show that someone of a high intelligence also had the drive and determination to achieve a respected qualification.
Degree's probably mean lot more to people who like to spend a lot of time in school, but I would venture to say that most IT people that are any good are in fact very creative and would shudder at that time investment.

Master's Degree in Water Resources Planning
The degree program enables planners and other technical professionals to complete requirements for a masters degree at government expense in a relatively compressed time frame.
The program fills an important niche in our need to rapidly build capability in the face of losses of experienced personnel by providing a significant incentive for hiring and retaining planning talent as well as enhancing that talent through the opportunity for professional growth offered by an advanced professional education.
Funding for the Masters degree program is a local responsibility.
