  The Voice of the Turtle
With this odd duality, his teenage fans seem quite at ease: they prefer him to be one of them in his unbuttoned moments, but expect him to sing in a near foreign tongue: rather as a congregation might wish the sermon to be delivered in the vernacular, and the plainsong chanted in mysterious Latin.
The essay, "Young England, Half English", was originally written in December 1957, when a certain group of Liverpool lads was still known as the Quarry Men.
Englishness is continuous, it stretches into the future and the past, there is something in it that persists, as in a living creature.

Part of the six year lag between his last album, William Bloke, and his latest, England, Half English, he spent in collaboration with Wilco, tailoring music to lyrics written by Woody Guthrie -- Guthrie who performed throughout the 40s with a guitar marked with the words this machine kills fascists dead.
England, Half English finds Bragg involved in another collaborative effort - this time sharing songwriting responsibilities with his new back-up band, The Blokes.
Listening to England, Half English I was reminded of an evening spent in a crowded auditorium during the 2000 presidential race.

Political activist and singer-songwriter Billy Bragg is back with his band, The Blokes.
England, Half English finds Bragg doing what he does best, writing political folk-pop songs, deep enough to seep into your subconscious and allow you to soak up the message.
If one didn't know it, it might pass them up, which seems to be the way Bragg wants it, preferring to speak to those that get it, and giving the rest beautiful melodies.

For MacInnes, half English' described the way in which Fifties' society was being increasingly informed by a diversity of cultures and attitudes, ranging from American influences on English pop music and teenage fashions to the impact of post-war African and West Indian communities in England.
This emerging multi-cultural England would not be recognized, however, by the Establishment custodians of traditional Englishness.

For MacInnes, ‘half English’ described the way in which Fifties’ society was being increasingly informed by a diversity of cultures and attitudes, each in turn contributing new ingredients to the idea of an English identity.
Englishness, in this context, is far from a denial of a multi-cultural society – it supplies the very framework for its existence.
England, Half-English is also about the present day; the idea that Englishness can be simply defined by the day to day things that happen in the physical space that’s England.

A George Orwell quote on the inner sleeve of Billy Bragg's frustratingly uneven England, Half English suggests that Bragg is out to explore both his sense of alienation from his native land and England's alienation from its older, purer self.
But while a couple of tracks, notably the withering "Take Down the Union Jack," fulfill that promise, overall the album is a decidedly mixed bag of character vignettes and the rabble-rousing political tunes that Bragg can probably write in his sleep by now.
England, Half English also fails to develop a unified musical voice; the songs skitter from pop to reggae to ska to the Algerian folk-based "Baby Faroukh." It's nice to see an artist trying out new styles, but here they feel forced.

 Figgle: Music. Stuff. For You.
Harsh criticisms are bound to surface for England, Half English, which is a shame, because while the carping is predictable, the album is not.
Yes, there are the expected left-leaning manifestos, and shame on anyone who’d claim that Bragg’s politics have gotten in the way of his song writing (just because YOU’VE fallen into a nasty habit of comfortably numb consumerism, doesn’t mean he should be letting go of his best intentions as well).
A bit better is the title track - “England, Half English” - an inquiry into England’s obsession with anachronistic notions of monarchy and empire in an age where, due to ethnic diversity, ‘English-ness’ is a fuzzy notion at best.

Now, Bragg returns to the UK for "England, Half English," his first album of original material in six years.
Taking its name from a 40-year-old essay collection by Colin MacInnes ("Absolute Beginners"), "England, Half English" centers on the volatile politics of national identity, an issue considered the province of the far right and neo-fascists.
The title song of "England, Half English" takes its tune from "Yanass el Ghorba (The Emigres)," an Algerian folk song, tosses in some reggae rhythms and vividly illustrates how being "English" today involves a variety of cultures.

With all the attention Billy Bragg receives for being a thorn in the side of England’s political conservatives, it’s easy to forget that he hasn’t always been an issue-oriented songwriter.
His new album is grounded in a belief that the English identity should be an inclusive one — a rallying cry for the acceptance of a modern and diverse England.
But if that’s the overall theme, then it’s certainly not the only topic on his mind, and his cheeky wit is in full play — "She filled my head with the awful noise/Of her disappointment and the Pet Shop Boys" is one of the more amusing lines he gets off.

While the music may have changed over the years, Billy Bragg’s message remains the same – speak your mind, stand up for your beliefs and God help you if you are a multinational corporation that is only concerned with the bottom line.
The 12 tracks on England, Half-English challenge us to consider identity – both personal and national – and to try to understand the identities of our neighbours at the same time.
Politics and ideologies aside, the album presents some classic Bragg material, such as the title track, "St. Monday" and "Baby Faroukh." Still, many of the songs seem to be missing something distinctly Bragg-ish.
