The Beat (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Beat, known in the United States as The English Beat in order to avoid confusion with Paul Collins' band of the same name, was a popular Two Tone ska and pop music group.
The band was formed in the English city of Birmingham in 1978, which was a period of high unemployment and social-political upheaval in the UK.
The Beat were part of the revival of 1950s and 1960s Jamaican ska rhythms and melodies in the UK.

 About English beat poetry
The story of English beat poetry begins in a man's attempt to assert the nobility of his soul in the face of alienation from his environ, an irrelevant suburban "village" (sic), and that oldest of phenomena: being jilted, dumped, by a girlfriend, while "down".
English beat poetry was also born out of a more distant personal history: that of associating with the homeless and feeling, psychologically at least, homeless myself.
English beat poetry is an attempt to formulate a rush of rhyme in prose-style that drums on the stairwell of modern culture, like the rain of Rainbowed Passions.

English Beat were a terrific pop band who used ska, reggae and dance pop as their musical pallette, but had a message in many of their lyrics.
Back in the day the Beat were probably second to Madness as far as new wave ska bands go but I have to say time has probably been kinder to the Beat as these songs sound a lot less dated then some of the Madness efforts.
This wonderful English band (known there as The Beat--the 'English' was added because a forgettable new wave band had already registered the name in the U.S.) was a supple blend of ska, reggae and pop.

 The Beat : History
When The Beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979, it was a time of social, political and musical upheaval.
The Beat were all about inclusion, rather than exclusion, and this showed in their personnel and their music influences.
By Christmas of 1979, The Beat were riding high in the UK charts with their first single, a smoking remake of the classic Smokey Robinson tune "Tears of a Clown".

Not quite fitting in with the new wave genre nor hailed as your typical mod band, English Beat diversified themselves with a mix of catchy ska rhythms, a hip reggae beat, and some jazzy horns.
It was what it was back then, but music's come a long way and English Beat has missed a few to be entering the scene again and tacking all their songs on one album claiming it to be their greatest.
I suggest leaving English Beat in the past where they belong and give us some greatest hits worthy of the title.

The English Beat was known as The Beat everywhere in the world except the U.S. But since this is an American site, we'll go with The English Beat.
The English Beat, along with The Specials, The Selecter and, to a lesser extent, Madness, was one of the most important and influential ska revivalist or "two-tone" groups of the 1980s.
Formed in U.K.'s Birmingham in 1978, The English Beat filled an interesting niche in the genre thru the use of alternating lead vocals by guitarist Dave Wakeling and toaster Ranking Roger, an essential element of the true "two-tone" sound.
