Wrexham is actually very close to the English border but maybe the Welsh teaching policy means that a lot of people there are able to speak, or at least understand, some Welsh.
There is one pub near Oswestry that literally straddles the English / Welsh border...the public bar is in Wales and the lounge bar in England...the village is called Llanymynech and the border splits the village betwen the two countries.
In fact, members of the EDP (English Democrats Party) are considering standing in the 2007 Welsh Assembly Elections on the Ticket "English Democrats - letting Monmouthshire decide" to see whether or not the people of Monmouthshire want to be in Wales or in England.

Pete should write back saying that "The English courts are currently of the opinion that the importance of free speech outweighs the right to sue for defamation when it comes to political parties standing for election, and as such have ruled that policial parties have no right to sue for defamation.
Still, judging by their accounts, the English Democrats don't themselves have `deep pockets to pay out for compensation', so a lawsuit may not be rewarding....
The most the English would ever do in the same situation (after they had put the kettle on, of course) is press for the appointment of an overworked and underpaid occupation ombudsman to handle complaints.
