Gambit Publications Limited - Chess Explained: the English Opening
The English Opening is a flexible and dynamic choice for White, which avoids a great deal of sharp and well-mapped opening theory.
The English gives rise to an immense variety of structures, ranging from reversed Sicilians to Hedgehogs and fluid or locked central structures.
It is an opening where strategic mastery of typical positions is of immense benefit, and where Black needs to combine circumspection and vigour to obtain a viable game.

Chess opening - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is therefore normal for both players to either castle in the opening (simultaneously developing one of the rooks) or to otherwise bring the king to the side of the board via artificial castling.
Opening theory began being studied more scientifically from the 1840s on, and many opening variations were discovered and named in this period and later.
The name given to an opening is not always that of the first player to adopt it; often an opening is named for the player who was the first to popularize it or to publish analysis of it.

English Opening - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The English Opening is the chess opening 1.c4 (in algebraic notation), the fourth most popular opening move in chess.
The English derives its name from the English (unofficial) world champion, Howard Staunton, who played it during his 1843 match with Amant.
It fell out of favor (the opening was notably disdained by Morphy), but is now recognized as a solid opening that may be used to reach both classical and hypermodern positions.

Workshop - New ChessBase CDs: "Paul Morphy" and "English opening"
I can still remember the first time I ever encountered the English Opening, way back in the day, and (of course) it had to be in a tournament.
Either way, 1.c5 is one of the opening moves I traditionally hate to see when I have the Black pieces.
Consequently, I was intrigued by the arrival of the new ChessBase CD English 1.c4 e5 by Mihail Marin in my mailbox.

This is not the most popular opening for F Bre: it is unlikely to result in a centre gain for France, unlike F Bre-MAO, and compromises an assault on England by most likely pinning down the Fleet in Brest, where the French player would rather be building a second fleet.
It assumes an understanding with England over the English Channel, and though it must be regarded as anti-German, the opening still allows France the opportunity to take three neutral centres in Autumn (with A Bur-Bel, A Mar-Spa and F MAO-Por).
Richard Sharp's name for the opening: F Bre-ENG, A Par-Pic and A Mar H. A Mar-Bur, the Northern Dash, is the more common move.

An Introduction to English Opening Strategy by Richard Hucknall   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The island corner position means that English home centres will be easy to defend and her two fleets have command of the northern seas until at least 1902 when an alliance between her two immediate neighbours is essential to challenge her superiority.
With this opening he can take Norway in the Autumn even in the face of Russian opposition from StP and still be able to defend London should the French have moved into the English Channel in the Spring.
Despite the limitations of opening moves, England must conduct a lot of diplomacy prior to the first moves based on how he wants the game to develop in the middle game and where he hopes to launch his first land offensive.

There are two common English opening fleet combinations: the Northern Opening (F Lon-NTH, F Edi-NWG) and the Southern Opening (F Lon-ENG, F Edi-NTH).
The opening vies in popularity with the "Churchill Opening", another version of the Northern Opening in which A Lvp is ordered to Edinburgh, from whence it can be convoyed onto the continent by either of the two fleets (most likely A Edi-Nor or A Edi-Bel).

Writing for Publication: Opening Sentences [English Online]
Since 1983 the English Department at California's San Jose State University has sponsored the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, a literary competition that ask entrants to compose the worst opening sentence for an imaginary novel.
The contest is named for Edward George Earle Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873), a prolific Victorian novelist who in his day was second in popularity only to Charles Dickens.
It was Bulwer-Lytton who introduced his novel Paul Clifford with the notorious opening line, "It was a dark and stormy night..." Aside from being a little obvious and melodramatic it's not a bad line.

For the most part the opening is positional in nature, but there are many opportunities for tactics, much more than in 1.d4 openings IMHO.
Another aspect I like is that few players have a pet defense against the English as they do against 1.e4.

Of those articles, the one dealing with England was the one I was least happy with, it was written in a hurry and far too biased in favour of attacking France.
This opening also preserves some flexibility in that if Norway can be taken uncontested, England has the possibility of a convoy to Belgium if a friendly neighbour is inclined to support the move, or convoying via NTH to Norway and putting the F(NWG) into BAR for a supported attack on StP in S02.
This opening isn't as anti-French as it first looks, though most people will get twitchy if a neighbour moves a unit to border one of their home SCs on the first move of the game.

Firstly, there are the 'transpositional' openings, and this includes 1 g3, and 1 d3, where White sometimes transposes into an English, or Réti, often plays reversed Pirc, King's Indian, or Modern Defence positions, and also 1 Nc3 (Dunst).
These openings are rarely played to reach original positions, but to take the opponent out of his theoretical knowledge.
These are further split into two groups, the reasonably respectable ones: 1 b3 (Larsen's Opening) where White plays for the control of the a1-h8 diagonal, 1 f4 (Bird's Opening) a sort of reversed Dutch Defence, where White tries to control e5, and mount a kingside attack.
