		Nor was there a printed English version, even of the New Testament, for close on half a century after Caxton's death, a circumstance largely due to the energy of the Tudor dictatorship and the severity of the Arundelian Constitutions enacted by Convocation at Oxford in the year 1408:against Wycliffe and his work.
		A further revision of this version was carried out by Coverdale for a second edition which appeared in April, 1540, and is known as Cranmer's Bible, mainly from the judicious and earnest preface which the archbishop wrote for it.
		The history of the English revision is given at length in the preface to the English Revised Version of the New Testament.

	About the RSV
		The English Revised Version of the Bible was published in 1881-1885; and the American Standard Version, its variant embodying the preferences of the American scholars associated in the work, was published in 1901.
		The publication of the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments, was authorized by vote of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. in 1951.
		The present revision is based on the consonantal Hebrew and Aramaic text as fixed early in the Christian era and revised by Jewish scholars (the "Masoretes") of the sixth to ninth centuries.

		The New Testament version commonly called the "Revised Version" (RV) or the "English Revised Version" (ERV) of 1881, of which the American Standard Version was an American edition.

	The Revised English Bible

	Haven't there been several revisions of the KJV?
		The first attempted revision of the KJV was the English Revised Version in the late 1800s, which was so thoroughly corrupted by the scholarship of Westcott and Hort, that it can not even be considered a revision, let alone edition, of the KJV.
		This myth was used by the English Revisers of 1881 and has been revived in recent years by Fundamentalist scholars hoping to sell their latest translation.
		In conclusion, the New King James is not a revision in the vein of former revisions of the King James Version.

		The reasons for their choosing of the ASV were twofold: One reason for adoption of the ASV was due to its usage of"Jehovah" as the Divine Name, which was congruent with their doctrine, although their usage of it seems to have predated the release of the ASV.
		Also, there was a perception that the ASV had improved the translation of some verses in the King James Version, and in other places it reduced the verses that they found to be erroneously translated in the KJV to mere footnotes, removed from the main text altogether.
		In fact, it has often been criticized for its "translation English." Some have called it "strong in Greek, but weak in English." Although it is certainly not written in contemporary English, it is nevertheless hard to beat if one desires a study Bible which is very literal in its rendering of the original languages.

	The apostasy of the English Revised Version
		Another of the members of the English Revision committee (1870-85) was WILLIAM ROBERTSON SMITH (1846-1894).
		After he participated in a communion service with the other revisers, a letter was published in The Times (July 11, 1870) in which he proudly declared that though he had received communion, he had refused to recite the Creed since he would not compromise his "principles" as one who denied the deity of Jesus Christ.
		It is very significant that in the enlarged edition Smith gloried in the various changes in the Westcott-Hort text and the Revised Version which made it simpler for him to dispute the deity of Jesus Christ.
