 English
English mariners probably fished in Canadian waters even before John CABOT'S voyage of 1497; Dr John Dee, Queen Elizabeth I's astrologer, who was interested in the discovery of the NORTHWEST PASSAGE, found evidence to suggest that 2 Bristol merchants - Thorne and Eliot - may have reached Newfoundland c 1494.
English merchants financed several voyages at the beginning of the 16th century, and as early as 1527 the harbour of ST JOHN'S became a rendezvous site for fishing vessels.
The first waves of English immigration contributed greatly to the farming population in the rural areas and to the skilled artisan population in the towns, but after WWII many English immigrants were professionals, technicians or individuals concerned in various ways with the arts.

Hiberno-English - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
English as it is spoken in Ireland is the result of the Irish language and the interaction of the English and Scots varieties brought to Ireland during the Plantations of Ireland in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The early English settlement of Ireland occurred around the same time as England's settlement of the Caribbean colonies, which partially accounts for phonological similarities shared by West Indian dialects and Hiberno-English.
It is not a parallel of the English word "fucking", despite their similarity, and is generally less offensive.

English Settlement: Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage
The initial establishment of a British population in Newfoundland can be traced to the English colonizing schemes in the early 17th century, particularly the planting of a colony at Cupers Cove (Cupids, Conception Bay) by the London and Bristol Company in 1610, and the southern Avalon plantation.
Throughout the 17th century the settled population was augmented by fishermen and their families from the English fishing fleets engaged in the migratory cod fishery.
Settlements that came to be occupied each winter were rarely occupied for many years by the same people, but some families did persist.

 American English
The English that was brought to America in seventeenth century was, of course, the language--or versions of the language--of Early Modern England.
English is destined to be in the next and succeeding centuries more generally the language of the world than Latin was in the last or French is in the present age.
American English is regarded as having preserved archaic features which have since been altered in British English--i.e., American speech maintained features of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English--such as the preservation of r in most dialects, and "flat a" [æ] as in "path": features that were lost in southern England at the end of the eighteenth century.

 Early English Settlement
English loyalty and patriotism asserted their power in the hearts of these exiles for conscience sake.
They patriotically declined this generous proposal because they wished to live on "English land," somewhere within the bounds of the North Virginia domain, the proprietors whereof were then contemplating vast schemes of colonization under a new charter which they hoped to obtain from the king.
They were assailed by a few Indians who knew the English as kidnappers, for it was only a few years before that Hunt had carried away more than a score of their people.

The Englishes spoken in Australia and New Zealand were strongly infleunced by its early settlers and the close relationship to the United Kingdom due to their status as white-settler colonies of the British Empire.
Given the importance of English for international communication, it is not surprising that many countries – including Switzerland – conceive it necessary to teach English to children in their very salad days.
While it is true that English has ‘conquered’ ground from many other native languages and is not always used for the sake of communicative functionality, this attitude nevertheless neglects that it is the speakers themselves who govern the use and spread of a language.

 The Protestant Idea of America
The English, however, particularly concentrated on the agricultural resources of North America, particularly the trade in tobacco and cotton (which was also exported from India).
Because they were primarily agricultural settlements, the English government did not see much profit in supporting them; moreover, becase they were primarily settled by religious radicals, the governments of James I and later Charles I saw no reason to help them thrive through favorable mercantilist policies.
For the most part, however, America was religious settlement and a largely Protestant one at that (with the exception of Maryland which was settled by English Catholics and Virginia which was settled by radical Anglicans).

XTC: English Settlement - Musik CDer
English Settlement is a watershed work for XTC that provides a valuable link between the band they had been (caustic, high pitched, and quirky) and the band they became (sublime, pastoral, and still undeniably quirky).
No doubt a huge shock when it came out, "English Settlement" finds XTC abandoning the punk, ska and new wave trappings of their early records for something wholly different-- 12 string guitars, pastoral framings and midtempos dominate this sprawling double album that points way to the future of the band.
For all my complaints about it, "English Settlement" is a fairly enjoyable album, but it was clearly a transition, and with a piece as strong as "Mummer" around the corner, it's hard to consider this one without that.

In the meantime, the English were engaged in what would be called today a "cold war"-- pin-pricking the Spaniard in the West Indies and about to settle on the American mainland at a spot sufficiently close to Spanish Florida to constitute both an economic and a military threat to Spain.
Growth of the English colony would circumscribe Spain's own colonial effort; at the same time, the location chosen for the English colony was close enough to serve as a base of operations against Spanish new world ship- ping.
