The various speckled coat colors when occurring in English Setters are referred to as belton; valid combinations are white with fl flecks (blue belton) or with orange flecks (orange belton— depending on the intensity of the color, they might be lemon belton or liver belton), or white with fl and tan flecks (tricolour belton).
English Setters are energetic, people-oriented dogs, that are well suited to families who can give them attention and activity, or to working with a hunter, where they have a job to do.
There is evidence that the English Setter originated in crosses of the Spanish Pointer, large Water Spaniel, and Springer Spaniel, which combined to produce an excellent bird dog with a high degree of proficiency in finding and pointing game in open country.

  English art
English art was once again revitalized by foreign artists, in particular the Flemish painters Peter Paul Rubens, who visited England briefly, and Anthony van Dyck, who settled in England to become court painter to Charles I. His baroque elegance dominated 17th-century portraiture.
By the end of the century English art was being influenced by French artists, in particular Edgar Degas and the Impressionists.
English Impressionists founded the New English Arts Club in 1886, and French influence, which continued well into the 20th century, can be seen in the work of Wilson Steer, John Singer Sargent (another American working in England), Walter Sickert, and Augustus John.

English school of painting - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Generally, the term "school" is used to designate a special collection of traditions and processes, a particular method, a peculiar style in design, and an equally peculiar taste in colouring - all contributing to the representation of a national ideal existing in the minds of native artists at the same time.
Many scholars say there was no English school of painting before the 18th century, as the most important painters who worked in England came from abroad and English art lovers only liked paintings of foreign old masters.
The Pre-Raphaelite movement, established in the 1840s, dominated English art in the second half of the 19th century.

Thornhill's son-in-law William Hogarth, the outstanding figure in English painting before Reynolds and Gainsborough, was, despite his chauvinism and virulently anti-French sentiments, heavily influenced by the continental Rococo style.
This, however, was not the case with all the next generation of painters; and the Scottish-born Allan Ramsay (1713-1784) studied in Rome and Naples in 1736-38 before settling in London in 1739.
The Discourses that he delivered to the Royal Academy (founded in 1768 with Reynolds as its first president) are the most impressive statement in English of the central ideas of European art theory from the time of Leon Battista Alberti's treatise.

Stanley Spencer: under an english heaven Art in America - Find Articles
Prodigious from early on, touted when he was an art student and already the recipient of important awards, Stanley Spencer (1891-1959) was confident of his gifts, a helpful trait in the world of art, where the unusual or original may be trounced by people of little vision but large voices or, worse, ignored.
An "English vision" also implies a certain insularity, a segregation from the mainstream, and the singularity and independence that come with it.
She emphasizes the unfairness of ascribing Spencer's extraordinary originality to "eccentricity," a characterization which undercuts his training as well as his concentrated strength of thought and feeling.

 Rutgers University Press
England in this period was a highly modernized society, but the art it produced is not "modernist" in the sense that the word has been used to describe French art of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
This book seeks to break the association of "modern" art in England with French models and to describe anew the relationship between English art, England's artists, and their modern culture.
By identifying an array of responses to modern life and experience, the essays inaugurate a revisionist view of the period and reveal that modern English artists and art were profoundly involved with questions about the relationship between artistic tradition and the circumstances and subjects of modern life and modern art practice.
