Another variation on the English auction is the open-exit auction, where the bidders must announce that they are dropping out of the bidding and they can't reenter.
Winner's curse is rampant in these auctions due to strong competition and inexperienced participants getting carried away in the heat of the moment.
A disadvantage for both buyers and sellers with the English auction is that everyone must be in communication over the course of the auction, which can be expensive and difficult.

It might be noted that in France, the auction privilege (the right to conduct an auction) is sold to a select few individuals (some 500 throughout the country) by the central government.

Sealed first-price auction: In this type of auction all bidders simultaneously submit bids in such a way that no bidder knows the bid of any other participant.
Sealed second-price auction, also known as a Vickrey auction: This is identical to the sealed first-price auction, except the winning bidder pays the second highest bid rather than his own.
Both the English and the second-price sealed-bid auctions will theoretically lead to the bidder's bidding up to (or submitting as a sealed bid) their true valuation of the item.

The Wine Auction of the Hospices de Beaune is a symbol in the tradition of charity auction
The success of the annual auction did not mislead the administrators, who tolerated no concessions as to the quality of "their" wines: the 1956 and 1968 vintages were not put up for sale, and the corresponding auctions were canceled, since the production was judged to be "mediocre".
This reputation is not only due to the television coverage : in order to have their name printed on the labels of the Hospices de Beaune, the buyers must respect a severe list of obligations, particularly to grow their wine in the wine-growing region of Burgundy and to use traditional bottle formats (75 cl).

Abstract: It is widely believed that the English auction is solved after the dominated strategies are eliminated.
This opinion is formally confirmed only for one "ascending clock" auction and can not be generalized for most other English auctions.
In this paper I show that the formal argument which is usually given in this context can not be derived from the dominance criterion alone, but that it can be used to prove that competitive bidding is the unique maximin strategy of a bidder who believes that his opponents do not play dominated strategies.
