English coin Florin or Double Leopard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Florin or Double Leopard was an attempt by English king Edward III to produce a gold coinage suitable for use in Europe as well as in England (see also Half Florin or Leopard and Quarter Florin or Helm).
The florin, based on a French coin and ultimately on coins issued in Florence, Italy, in 1252, was a standard coin widely used internationally, with a value of six shillings.
Unfortunately the gold used to strike the coins was overvalued, resulting in the coins being unacceptable to merchants, and the coins were withdrawn after only a few months in circulation, in August 1344, to be melted down to produce the more popular gold Noble.

English brasses comprised a number of separate pieces, cut from a single sheet of metal, each of which was engraved and set within an indentation (matrix) carved out of the stone slab so that the brass was flush with the surface.
The obverse of the florin or double leopard, which was based on a Florentine gold coin, depicted the king enthroned beneath a canopy (the majesty), flanked by two leopards, on a field of fleurs-de-lis.
The half-florin or leopard has a crowned lion passant, wearing as a cloak the banner of the arms of England and, on the reverse, a cross within a quatrefoil, in the angles of which are further leopards.

It is important to note that the variety of coins called Florins, Ducats, Doubloons, and Gulders across the face of Europe, were generally copies of the originals, or coins merely named after the original; it is therefore impossible to accurately place a value to these.

An earlier version of the Florin existed in the 14th century; it was a gold coin introduced by Edward III in 1344 in an attempt to produce coinage suitable for use in Europe as well as in England.
The gold used to strike the coins was overvalued, which resulted in the them being unacceptable to merchants, and the Florin was withdrawn after only a few months in circulation; it was replaced the same year by the Noble.
The coin is considered to be part of British coinage because it has no indication of what country it was minted for, being made in the same style as the contemporary Third Farthing.
