The coin is a development of the earlier Rose Noble, or Ryal which was worth ten shillings when issued by Kings Edward IV and Henry VII, and fifteen shillings when issued by Queens Mary and Elizabeth I.
The Spur Ryal, so called because the sun and rose on the reverse resemble a spur, was introduced during James I's second coinage (1604-1619) when it initially had a value of fifteen shillings (15/-), but in line with all gold coins its value was raised by 10% in 1612, to sixteen shillings and sixpence (16/6).

Later in the year, however, this coin was replaced by a larger coin of 6s 8d weighing 136.7 grains called a noble, but a gradual reduction in the weight and fineness of gold (to 120 grains) and silver (to 18 grains) over the next few years again reduced the integrity of the coinage.
In March, 1465, the gold coinage was cornpletely reformed with the appearance of the ryal or rose noble weighing 120 grains with a value of 10 shillings, with a half and quarter in proportion.
The coins, except for the half-penny, were of uniform style with a shield containing the cross of St. George on the obverse and two shields with the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew on the reverse.

Silver, and later gold coins, were struck at this mint and may be distinguished from those struck at other mints by a variety of marks; the letter `C' on the early gold coins, a flag on the stern of the ship, an annulet on the king's breast and other marks made the identification fairly easy.
The coins may be divided into two types; the heavy coinage of 1399-1412 with the noble weighing 120 grains and the light coinage 1412-13, when the weight of the noble was reduced to 108 grains.
The Wars of the Roses began in 1455 and the subsequent defeat of the Lancastrian army at Mortimer's Cross in Herefordshire by Edward, duke of York, in 1461 enabled the Yorkists to proclaim Edward king.

Like most traditional collectors, I believe coins are to be primarily appreciated for their artistic beauty, historical connections, and the joy of pursuing them.
In truth, there are probably substantial numbers of traditional collectors who prefer to acquire coins destined to increase in esteem and value over time; treasured heirlooms and a source of pride to be passed from one generation to the next.
Any coin displaying a proven annualized growth pattern of at least 5-10% over a span of many years qualifies as an attractive option for the collector desiring coins headed for much higher price levels a few years down the road.
