Cricket entered an epochal era in 1963, when English counties modified the rules to provide a variant match form that produced an expedited result: games with a restricted number of overs per side.
The team involved were rarely fully representative, and the 48-day boat trip between Australia and England was one many cricketers were not able or willing to undertake, and so the Home teams tended to enjoy a great advantage.

 CRICKET
Once ten of the eleven players of the batting team have been dismissed (i.e., ten wickets have been taken) the team is said to be 'All Out' and their innings comes to an end.
A team that sets an enormous target but takes a long time over it risks drawing the match by leaving themselves insufficient time to dismiss the other team, which is the reason a captain will often declare his team's innings closed.
In other forms of cricket, if a player gets injured or becomes ill during a match, a substitute is allowed to field instead of him; though he cannot bowl, bat, or act as a captain or wicket-keeper.

 Cricket
The game of cricket was exported from England to all of its colonies, including those in Asia and Africa, during the nineteenth century as a way to reinforce a hegemonic cultural order in the face of the emancipation of England's slave population.
Once the slaves were emancipated, cricket became the new cultural institution by which England sought to socialize the populations and reinforce hierarchies in its colonies.
Cricket was through and through a "gentleman's" game, and all others were excluded by their inability to demonstrate an understanding of cricket's image of the ideal Englishman.

Marxist commentaries on cricket and football
English cricket is highly polarized between the County and Test game, the domain of the ruling class and its middle class hangers on, and League cricket, particularly in Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The English called their bowling 'leg theory' and the Australians dubbed it 'bodyline.' It was extremely successful and the English smashed their way to victory.
The vast majority of cricket matches in England - sorry for seeming a little imperial oriented, but less is played in Scotland and Ireland than in Holland, and only SE Wales boasts a county side - is limited over, one-day in the pro-leagues of Yorkshire and Lancashire, and evening games for the majority.

PETER CAVE: England's controversial cricket tour of Zimbabwe hangs in the balance today, after captain Michael Vaughan's team cancelled a scheduled flight from South Africa in response to Zimbabwe's banning of journalists from eight British media organisations who were planning to cover the matches.
The ICC, as you'll remember last year, when the World Cup for cricket was on, the ICC was very forceful in making sure that all journalists were given access to come and cover the World Cup matches in Zimbabwe.
During the cricket World Cup last year, there were some incidents in Harare, but most of the protests at the cricket and the confrontations were in Bulawayo, so it'll be interesting to see what happens if these matches go ahead.
