British hip hop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
British hip hop was originally influenced by the hip hop scene in New York City, at first being very much in awe of the American innovators, with British rappers often adopting American accents in the early years, before gaining the confidence to develop their own styles.
The growth of British hip hop was given a boost when in 2002, the BBC launched a digital radio station 1Xtra devoted to "new fl music" including hip hop, RnB, garage, dancehall, and drum and bass.
British hip hop was also hard hit by the record industry waking up to the implications of sampling, and beginning to charge for the use of samples and prosecute those who used them without permission.

Hip hop - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term hip hop (also spelled "hip-hop" or "hiphop") refers both to a musical (see hip hop music) and cultural genre or movement (hip hop culture) that was developed predominantly by (but is not limited to) African Americans[1].
Hip hop as a culture was further defined in 1983, when former Black Spades gang member Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force released a track called Planet Rock.
The mainstream media began to focus on one of the greatest impacts of hip hop; instead of fighting with guns and knives, former gangmembers had a new way of battling--though break dancing, rapping, turntable mixing, and tagging (graffiti).

Hip hop is perhaps the only place in German culture where Germans of colour have any kind of media profile.
Another point in German hip hop's favour is that it is guaranteed to annoy the slightly creepy anti-'Denglisch' association Verein Deutsche Sprache, whose mission in life is to keep Anglophone neologisms out of their sacred German language (forgetting that English itself comes largely from German in the first place).

I never said that hip hop is dead, sorry to ruin the ending but the author says hip hop is alive and well, it is the 'old school' producers he talks to in the book who said hip hop is dead.

It's rare to use the words 'hip hop' and 'serious academic research' in the same sentence, but a University of Calgary linguistics professor has relied on rap music as source material for a study of African American vernacular English.
Howe's focus was purely on the mechanics of the language and not on the culture of hip hop, which some have criticized as violent and misogynistic.
He was assisted by an undergraduate linguistics student, Jeff Long, who is keenly interested in hip hop music and who found many of the examples cited in the research.

Music Spectrum: Hip Hop/Rap: Jon Kennedy's Take My Drum to England
I mean, of course, back in da’ day, I had white-boy-accessible rap (Beastie Boys, Run-DMC), but I essentially dismissed most rap and hip hop as being repetitive, derivative, and lacking the substance I thought belonged in music.
I gotta be honest, because if I’m going to set out to write a little bit about the Hip Hop offerings of Jon Kennedy, it can’t be musings about how innovative or similar it is to what’s already been done; I don’t know those things.
This album is atmospheric with a backbeat, sound art that gets a groove on, a hip hop center with a candy-coating of soul, jazz, and all things funky.

 Swiss hip hop
Swiss hip hop is not a genre of hip hop music, but a term covering all hip hop music from Switzerland.
Early Swiss German rappers started rapping in English, but after the bilingual track "Murder by Dialect" by P27 featuring Black Tiger, rappers switched to their native Swiss German dialects.
Rappers from the French-speaking part (where the traditional dialects died out in most parts) and from the Italian-speaking part (where most people mix dialects and Standard Italian freely) only rap in the standard languages.
