In contrast to the strong horizontal branching of the prominent and widespread parent English Oak, the 'Fastigiata' cultivar is identifiable for its column-like figure and tight upward branching.
Whereas the parent English Oak commonly grows 40 to 60 feet tall and wide, the 'Fastigiata' cultivar grows 40 to 60 in height but often only has a crown spread from 10 to 15 feet.
The 'Fastigiata' cultivar, sometimes called the Upright English Oak, is an excellent choice for a design where a strong vertical element is appropriate and the planting area is somewhat limited.

Whatever the English do, it works, and we have much to learn from their many years of experience with these devices that, so far, seem particularly useful for regenerating oaks in California as well.
