English proverbs and sayings are included for comparison and to guide students as they learn new proverbs in Spanish.
Students have a list of the proverbs, and after the pantomime is complete, the “audience” guesses which proverb has been presented; they also share (in English) their understanding of the meaning of the skit.
Five of the proverbs are ones they have enjoyed and “collected” over the course of the unit that were not the object of class activities.

 Literary Encyclopedia: Proverbs (Old English)
A few of the “Durham Proverbs”, and the poem “Precepts” in the Exeter Book, follow this pattern, and it may be that the latter text was intended to be proverbial.
Proverbs are usually memorable because of their shape: there is usually some repetition, parallelism or contrast in the terms (hot – cold, leader bold – army bold), or the expression is brief and pointed.
Generally in Old English literature outside of the collections, however, proverbs are used to sum up succinctly a common opinion or an accepted view of a matter.

Traditional Maori Proverbs: Some General Themes by Paul Moon
Thus, the success of a proverb performance must depend ultimately on the listener's ability to perceive that he or she is being addressed in traditional, that is, proverbial, terms.
This fact, coupled with the cultural markers which give proverbs their fundamental level of meaning, leads to an even more essential implication: that "...the acceptance or rejection by tradition which follows immediately upon the creation of the proverb is a factor in its making quite as important as the first act of invention" [10].
Victorian collectors of traditional English proverbs sometimes edited out of their collections those proverbs which they found to be vulgar or offensive to the prevailing public sensitivities, and there is no reason to assume that there would be much difference in practices in nineteenth-century New Zealand.

Proverbs are short, pithy sayings that reflect the accumulated wisdom, prejudices, and superstitions of the human race.
In general, the particular phrasing of the proverbs, not their ideas, is what belongs to the cultural literacy of each nation and language.

This was followed by J. Hewood's Dialogue conteinyng the nomber in effect of all the proverbes in the englishe tongue (London, 1546), T.Draxe's A treasure of ancient adagies (London, 1616), G.Herbert's Outlandish Proverbs (1640), and D.Fergusson's Scottish Proverbs (1641).
A proverb is a short verse or prose sentence that expresses vividly and often allegorically a wise opinion, an ascertainment, an advice, and which is repeated in everyday conversation as an argument or example.
Although proverbs lost a lot of their reputation in the Age of Enlightenment as a result of their overwhelmingly medieval origin, they were by no means neglected by classical authors such as Lessing, Schiller and Goethe.

There is not a proverb collection that doesn't contain some proverbs commenting on matters of health or illness, and special collections of medical proverbs have also been assembled dating back to the late Middle Ages (Moll 1958:534-537).
Ancient proverbs obviously cannot compete with the scientific wisdom of scholarly books and journal articles on diseases that were not even known a decade ago.

The number of proverbs that remain undiscovered by this method cannot be estimated, as we lack statistics on how often the «proverbiality» of a proverb is emphasised and how often its usage is marked.
Proverbs occurring in the Economy column of Eesti Päevaleht were comparatively more abundant, including a striking example of manipulation with a proverb that was included in an insurance agent's call for buying insurance: «As the saying goes, «Stinging is no economy», and so is not being insured.
These additional proverbs were all situated in the first or the last paragraphs, and the «topic» of the proverb was not deviated from - the whole of the text between the proverb and the text border constituted a preparatory statement for the proverb or its conclusion.

Proverbs in English are commonly heard in the course of normal speech--they will not be found as frequently in writing as they are used in vernacular discourse.
It is a worthwhile exercise to give students proverbs on a daily basis--"an apple a day, keeps the doctor away." They can constitute the basis of discussion of their meaning and definition, and how they might be used in normal English discourse.
Proverbs can be used as well in oral exercises in which students are asked to repeat after the teacher without seeing it written down anywhere, until they can repeat the phrase from memory.

In fact, many typical British proverbs were handed over from French in medieval times - more or less as equivalents, and often as direct translations.
Also, after Erasmus of Rotterdam published adages in the 1500s, many "international medieval" proverbs were made from Latin and Greek sayings, some of which were terse aces of learning from days gone by.
Just as many French proverbs derive from Latin, and very many British proverbs derive from French ones, there were other inroads as well.

African Proverbs, Stories and Sayings - Bibliography
For some proverbs that she feels "are difficult to understand and to translate since they lack either meaningful English words for translation or do not match with relevant English words", she offers some social-cultural explanations.
To put it differently, if it is an actual proverb, it categorizes a social practice in terms of a prototype – not generalizing in terms of a particular action on the one hand, and “if a proverb like saying” is used by the character, it eventually becomes proverbial by being accepted.
Even though this proverb has wisdom in it, it is not necessary that all proverbs embody wisdom as already pointed out earlier and it is equally possible that they might be used merely as “comments” on social practice, without the tag of wisdom attached to them.
