English verbs - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Verbs in the English language are a lexically and morphologically distinct part of speech which describes an action, an event, or a state.
A regular English verb has only one principal part, the infinitive or dictionary form (which is identical to the simple present tense for all persons and numbers except the third person singular).
English exhibits similar idiomatic complexity with the interrogative mood, which in Indo-European languages is not, strictly speaking, a mood.

Verb - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A verb is a part of speech that usually denotes action ("bring", "read"), occurrence ("decompose", "glitter"), or a state of being ("exist", "stand").
English verbs are often flexible with regard to valency.
English only shows distinctive agreement in the third person singular, present tense form of verbs (which is marked by adding "-s"); the rest of the persons are not distinguished in the verb.

English grammar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
English grammar is the study of rules governing the use of the English language.
English is a subject verb object (SVO) language: it prefers a sequence of subject–verb–object in its simplest, unmarked declarative statements.
English also has a means of converting adjectives into adverbs: the addition of the suffix <-ly> changes an adjective to an adverb (in addition to moving it to the appropriate place in a sentence).

A Passive verb is a verb in a passive sentence.
A redundant verb is a verb that forms the preterit or the perfect participle in two or more ways, and so as to be both regular and irregular; as, thrive, thrived or throve, thriving, thrived or thriven.
Passive verbs, in English, are always of a compound form; being made from active-transitive verbs, by adding the Perfect Participle to the auxiliary verb BE, through all its changes: thus from the active-transitive verb love, is formed the passive verb be loved.

Translating English Phrasal Verbs into Russian
Igor Yatskovich was born in the USSR in 1974.
Thus, in translation from English into Russian, the meaning of the English adverbial component of the phrasal verb is mostly conveyed by using the Russian prefix that reflects the character of the described action or state most accurately.
Strictly speaking, proper translation of English phrasal verbs to a high degree depends on the context in which they are used, which suggests the appropriate interpretation of the described action.

 English Irregular Verbs
English verbs have the base form, the simple past and the past participle.
For most of the verbs (regular verbs), the simple past and the past participle are spelled the same and are created by adding -ed to the base form.
Those verbs are mostly unpredictable, it is hard to derive them on the fly as you talk.

 Susan Jones's Verb List
The principal parts of the English verb are the base form, the simple past, and the past participle.
Verbs in English can be classified according to three different criteria: tense (present, past), aspect (perfect, progressive), and modality.
Following are the rules for using the principal parts of a verb, as well as a list of the irregular verbs showing all 3 parts, and a complete list of all the verb 'tenses' in English.

 Conjugation and Verbs
This modification of a verb to show different aspects or conditions of the action is called "conjugation" (kahn juh GAY chion), and a verb is said to "conjugate" (KAHN juh gate) when it's modified to exhibit these different conditions.
A verb, therefore, has a basic form or set of forms, which then conjugate in order to change the way its meaning is to be understood in a particular context.
So for a Old English verb, you must learn two things: (1) the stems, and (2) how the stems are modified at their ends to show different conditions under which the action is occurring.

E-Intro to Old English - 3. Basic Grammar: A Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The personal pronouns (Modern English I, you, she, he, it, etc.) refer to specific objects and are inflected for person--the first person referring to the speaker, the second person to someone or something the speaker is addressing, and the third person to any other thing.
In both Old and Modern English, the infinitive is the form that dictionaries use as the headword for verb entries.
This verb form is so called because of the resemblance between it and the past-tense form of the verb.

Engl401 | Lessons | Old English Weak Verbs: Present and Preterite
The Old English "weak verbs" are the ancestors of our "regular verbs," although this fact does not necessarily make them familiar, any more than the strong noun declension is familiar because it is the ancestor of our common noun declension.
The most noticeable point of similarity with Modern English verbs is that the past tense of most weak verbs is formed with a suffix similar to our -ed for past tense, so that (for example) ic lufie (I love) becomes ic lufode (I loved) in past tense.
There are several classes of weak verbs, as you can see by looking at the table in the outline grammar, but we will begin by learning only one representative verb, lufian, and that verb (for the moment) only in the indicative present and past tenses.

Modals and auxiliary verbs in English
Modals have always differed from ordinary verbs in Germanic, and in the course of the history of English, they have diverged from verbs even further, to the point where they now belong to a syntactic category of their own.
As in the case of emphasis, the verb appears in its bare form, and an appropriately tensed form of the auxiliary verb do is added to the sentence.
However, it is possible in English to use past-tense forms to refer to events or state contemporaneous with a reported time of speaking; this is the so-called sequence-of-tense phenomenon in reported speech, illustrated in (i).

Some of the verbs in our table are merely prefixed forms of an irregular verb.

The trend, in English, and especially in American English, is to standardize the irregular verbs.
