For northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax, for instance, the deposition of the first increment takes place at the initiation of exogenous larval feeding or after yolksac absorption which occurs five or six days after hatching (Brothers et al., 1976; Methot and Kramer, 1979).

The Mortality of Engraulis mordax in Southern California
The annual mortality rate for the northern anchovey, Engraulis mordax, is estimated to be 66.5% in southern California waters, although the mortality rate incrases sharply for older fish.
A method for evaluating recruitment regularity and age constancy of mortality is presented.

The northern anchovy, Engraulis mordax, is found in the study area.
The northern anchovy is widely distributed along the Pacific Coast, and three subpopulations were described by McHugh (1951) and supported by Vrooman et al.
Hubbs (1925) identified a separate subspecies, Engraulis mordax nanus in the brackish waters of San Francisco Bay.

A method of authenticating anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus L.) and gilt sardine (Sardinella aurita) semipreserves (salt-cured and fillets in oil) has been developed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by sequence and restriction site analysis.
The amplification of a fragment of the cytochrome b gene by universal primers produced a 376 base pairs (bp) fragment in all samples analyzed.
Therefore, the restriction length fragment polymorphism (RLFP) technique can be used to determine the species identity of anchovy and gilt sardine in semipreserves.
