The chipset is a series of chips attached directly to the motherboard, and is usually second in size only to the processor.
The architecture of a processor refers to the instruction set, registers, and memory-resident data structures that are public to a programmer and are maintained and enhanced from one generation of architecture to the next.
Collectively, some of the chips which reside on the motherboard are known as the motherboard's chipset.

Easing chip set shortage should relieve PC market | InfoWorld | News | 2005-11-04 | By Dan Nystedt, IDG News Service   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
A shortage of computer chip sets that has taken the blame for everything from slowing the momentum of brisk global PC sales to delaying the adoption of new memory chip technologies should be nearly over, component makers and analysts say, ensuring the vital part does not hurt PC sales during the important holiday buying season.
U.S. chip giant Intel, which has taken the brunt of industry ire over the chip set shortage, says a dearth of chip sets for low-end PCs could remain a problem through December, but that it has met demand for chip sets used in notebook PCs and servers over the past few months.
She said the company was able to raise chip set prices in October because of the shortage and expects to maintain higher prices due to increased manufacturing costs.

INTERNATIONAL Rectifier, represented by Soanar Plus, has introduced the smallest control and synchronous MOSFET chip set for existing and next-generation VRM10.x high-current synchronous buck converters where small size, high efficiency and maximum thermal conduction are mandatory.
The new chip set enables designers to make a very low profile power converter (0.98-inch) for 1U (1.75-inch height) rack sized server systems that meet VRM 10.x specifications.
The new chip set is also suitable for buck converters in servers and point-of-load converters in telecom and netcom systems.

 XML.com: XML on a Chip
On a chip, there is no such thing as an object or a struct, and pretty much everything consists of a constant number of bits so they can be stored in registers to represent the state.
Additionally, even if DOM on a chip is possible, the cost of garbage collecting all the objects would put a cap on the overall performance gain achievable using custom hardware.
However, the biggest problem with SAX on a chip is that SAX parsing itself is usually not a significant performance bottleneck for an application.

The chip set is the main interface between the PC's processor and components such as memory and peripherals.
The chip sets, when bought in 1000-unit quantities, cost $40 for the 850E, $37 for the 845GE, $34 for the 845PE, and $28 for the 845GV, Intel says.

Thus, a chip can be used in a QFP, in which it is wire-bonded to a lead frame, or it can be repackaged in the smaller CSP configuration by having the interposer convert the peripheral bonding sites of the die to an array configuration.
To buffer increases in chip speed, new materials are being researched for wafer-level interconnect (as evidenced by the announcement from IBM and others to use copper wiring instead of aluminum).
Since the time-to-market cycle seems to be a constant of about 50 weeks, one can easily see why the startup cost of a new microprocessor or a new chip set requires a premium payback in the first year and then is gradually reduced over time.

 ST-7A New Product Announcement
As expected, our initial tests show the enhanced ABG detectors are somewhat less sensitive than the enhanced non-ABG chips but they still appear to be about twice as sensitive as the standard ABG part in the visual spectrum.
Assuming that the standard ABG detectors are roughly 30 to 50 percent less sensitive than the non-ABG detectors, then the enhanced non-ABG detectors are as much as four times as sensitive as the standard ABG detector across the visible spectrum, and ten times as sensitive at the far end of the blue spectrum.
We have compared standard ABG cameras to the new enhanced non-ABG camera at the telescope and the enhanced non-ABG camera yields approximately 4 times the signal as a standard ABG detector under similar conditions.
