Enhanced Versatile Disc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Enhanced Versatile Disc (EVD) was announced on November 18, 2003 by China's Xinhua news agency as a response to the popular DVD Video format and its licensing costs (which some considered excessive).
On the EVD, the video codecs VP5 and VP6 from On2 Technologies were supposed to be used.
While the EVD format design including VP6 had been proposed to the Chinese government to become a standard, the effort appears to have stalled at that point and no further progress is evident.

AsiaFinest Discussion Forum -> Chinese Electronics Companies..
While the national standard of EVDs is in the near future, the new disc format is currently under the scrutiny of related global industry organizations before it will be accepted as an international technical standard, Zhang said.
Players powered by EVD technology are expected to offer as much as five times the quality of image definition compared with DVD players that dominate the market at present, and that is EVD's biggest advantage over DVD technology, according to experts.
The appearance of EVDs is regarded by some as a challenge to the "Blue Ray," a next-generation disc technology, which is being jointly developed by a number of global electronics companies like Sony, Samsung and Philips.

The first films on EVD will be available in Chinese shops by the end of the year, he said.
EVD was developed as a cheaper and better quality alternative to DVD by a group of researchers and manufacturers who formed the government-backed Beijing E-World Technology.

In the past year the EVD format has moved on enough to the point where EVD players are becoming widely available in China.
EVD's physical specifications are like that of a DVD with a 12cm disc diameter, same UDF file system and disc capacity of around 8.5GB.
Unlike DVD or even the upcoming HD-DVD and Blu-Ray technologies, EVD does not appear to have any sign of anti-piracy measures and the last thing any movie industry would like to see is a HDTV version of their movie being wide open to copying and piracy.

One of the drawbacks of presenting widescreen versions of films on video is that a lot of the storage capacity of the media is wasted on reproducing the fl bars at the top and bottom of the screen resulting in reduced vertical resolution of the film itself.
This means that all of the storage capacity of the DVD is used to store the actual picture information in its widescreen form and none of it is used on the fl bars, which are not displayed on 16:9 televisions anyway.
There may be operational quirks or nonstandard features such as enhanced fl level, conversion of DD signals to PCM, settings for the six-channel analog outputs, or picture zoom that are unique to your brand and model of player.
