Enigma Variations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
36 ("Enigma"), commonly referred to as the "Enigma" Variations, is a set of a theme and its thirteen variations written for orchestra by Edward Elgar in 1898–99.
The variations spring from the theme's melodic, harmonic and (especially) rhythmic elements, and the 14th extended variation forms a grand finale.
Dora was the stepdaughter of the sister of William Meath Baker, inspiration for the fourth variation, and sister-in-law of Richard Baxter Townsend, inspiration for the third.

 Enigma's Variations
Enigma enjoyed walking in the rain, but disliked having to wear a heavy raincloak (which would spoil the effect of her latest eye-catching outfit).
Enigma also created a slightly variant spell (only three words are changed in the formula) which makes the target imitate the first person he sees, whether it is the caster or not.
This version of the spell is part of the reason Enigma was expelled from the Great School; she was able to cast it on one of her tutors, who proceeded to ape the mannerisms of a particularly pompous and overblown visiting mage, nearly causing a major riot.

It is said that this variation, as well as an attempt to capture what Elgar saw as Jaeger's noble character, depicts a night-time walk the two of them had, during which they discussed Ludwig van Beethoven.

 "About the Enigma Variations"
Various solutions such as "Auld Lang Syne" have been suggested but perhaps the most plausible candidate is a theme (click to download excerpt.) from the Andante of Mozart's "Prague" Symphony, on which he may have been idly improvising when his wife remarked that it was a "good tune".
The variation begins with a reminiscence of an exercise he wrote for her though the solo viola only enters a little later, playing the actual exercise (for quick changing on the mostly open strings) softly at the very end of the variation.
Variation 12 (B.G.N.) was for the aforementioned cellist Basil Nevinson and it is the solo cello, which begins and ends this variation carried mainly by the cello ensemble.

He then improvised a few impromptu 'variations' in a way as to suggest the mannerisms of a few of their friends - a characteristic laugh, a slight stammer, an attempt to play the piano, a way of moving around a room and leaving with a slam of the door.
At the time of composition of the Enigma Variations she had had faith in him even though success and greatness for which he is now known was still around the corner.
The variation is a tribute to a very dear friend whose scientific and artistic attainments, and the whole-hearted way they were put at the disposal of his friends, particularly endeared him to the writer.

Ashton choreographed "Enigma Variations" in 1968, but the idea actually originated in the early 1950’s, when Julia Trevelyan Oman, then a design student, submitted a series of designs for a ballet to be based on Elgar’s music.
The relationship between Elgar and his wife is at the heart of the work, and the Nimrod variation, when Elgar, his wife, and his friend Jaeger walk in the woods is one of the richest depictions of sympathy and understanding and friendship in dance (or in any other field).
Enigma Variations is a picture of Elgar’s friends, but it was also a picture of Ashton’s Royal Ballet in 1968, and like so many profoundly subtle works, its success depends very much on casting.

The Enigma machine, first patented in 1919, was after various improvements adopted by the German Navy in 1926, the Army in 1928, and the Air Force in 1935.
From then until 1939, and indeed throughout the war, successive refinements were introduced, varying from service to service, and there were detailed changes in operating procedure until 1945.

However, the real-life story of the British capturing an Enigma from the U-110, on which the film is based, is, if anything, even more dramatic and moving than the action shown in the movie.
As he pictured the U-boat tumbling into the abyss where it would soon be crushed by the growing pressure, he thought of his childhood sweetheart, and tried to imagine how she would feel when she knew he had died.
The documents and Enigma machine seized from the U-110 did not, in spite of what is stated in the U-571 film and in the TV documentary Station X, recently repeated on Channel 4, help the British code-breakers to break the main naval Enigma code for the first time.

Only the thirteenth variation has given rise to speculation that Elgar's use of asterisks rather than initials or a pet name may hide the true identity of the subject, possibly an old flame of Elgar's who had recently emigrated from Britain.
But Elgar himself hinted at, and encouraged speculation over, a second, musical enigma, a popular tune which does not itself appear in the variations but of which the theme is the counterpoint.

In this "Enigma Variations" is a triumph of naturalism, but also of neo-classicism—the choreography is all ballet, though tempered with everyday human gesture, and hence humanized.
This, I think, is the ultimate basis for the dichotomy of exterior and interior in the "Enigma." Ashton framed it through the lens of time.
