 Movie-Vault.com: Print Review
Bilal, to be fair, may be simply reflecting the tendency in European filmmaking to associate profundity with ambiguity.
Bilal, showing the strains of an approach that favors pastiche over originality, never hesitates to liberally “borrow” from other, well-known science fiction films (some of them acknowledged “classics,” making his borrowings that much more brazen and calculated).
Bilal’s decision to use CGI humans as secondary characters is equally puzzling.

In quite a scene-specific commentary, Enki Bilal explains the significance of each scene, in terms of how it was shot, what is real and what is CGI, in terms of the music and how it all contributes to the scenes intended effect and to the film as a whole.
Bilal’s long-awaited adaptation of his most famous comicbook creation to screen is ultimately a disappointment, but the fault has little to do with shortcomings in the computer technology used to render much of the film.

Bilal was born in Yugoslavia (now Serbia), but has spent most of his life in France.
The stories he illustrates tend to be dystopian (to say the least) and he seems to revel in the textures of decaying buildings, chipped paint, tortured wood, cracked ceramics, rough stone, broken concrete, grimy, soot covered surfaces and wrinkled skin.
