Ennead - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ennead (a word derived from Greek, meaning the nine) is a grouping of nine deities, most often used in the context of Egyptian mythology.
Some Pharaohs created Enneads that incorporated themselves; most notably, Seti I in his temple at Redesiyah worshipped the Ennead that combined six important deities with three deified forms of himself.
It is however almost a certainy that the Ennead first appeared during the decline of Re's cult during the 6th dynasty, and due to it the cult soon saw a great resurgence.

 Egyptian Mythology,
From this myth of creation came the conception of the ennead, a group of nine divinities, and the triad, consisting of a divine father, mother, and son.
For example, the ennead of Memphis was headed by a triad composed of the father Ptah, the mother Sekhet, and the son Imhotep.
Similarly, when the Theban dynasties ruled Egypt, the ennead of Thebes was given the most importance, headed by the father Amon, the mother Mut, and the son Khonsu.

 The Ancient Egypt Site: Ennead
The earliest and most important Ennead was the one of Heliopolis, the center of solar cult in Ancient Egypt.
Horus and Thot are sometimes also counted to this Ennead, which makes the actual number of gods greater than 9.
An Ennead could indeed contain more or less than 9 gods as the number 9 can be interpreted as the plural of a plural and a plural would typically consist of 3.

Thus the Pythagoreans call the Ennead "Limitation," "Final Limit" and "Unsurpassable Limit," for it is the end of the process which gives specific characters to numbers, and after 9 their characters repeat: 1+0 = 1, 1+1 = 2, etc. The Ennead also shows the character of numbers by casting out nines.

I personally find the Enneads of Plotinus to be my "Bible", his concise and laser-like accuracy to logic and emphasis of "Union with the One" to be the Paramount of metaphysical writtings.
Its unfortunate that so many Christians seek 'God-talk' in the works of Plotinus, when in fact there are none, for Plotinus, an Emanationist who speaks of the insentient Absolute, the Divine, is utterly opposed to a sentient self-aware Creationistic GOD who holds the fate of mankind in his hand.
The Enneads are a collection of Plotinus' writings from fairly late in his life.
