Ennui - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ennui (Pronunciation: /ɑ̃nɥi/) is a feeling of weariness and dissatisfaction.
From the Old French verb a noun meaning “worry, boredom” was derived, which became ennui in modern French.
Ennui is different from boredom in that ennui describes weariness or annoyance over a long period of time; boredom is relieved easily, while ennui is constant.

Ennui was formed in 1998 by lead singer/guitarist Franq Pichler, and has since gone through so many line-up changes that the phrase "starting over" lost all meaning.
With the solidification of members Ennui had the means to put the volumes of Franq's written material to work.
The result was Ennui's 2006 self-titled full length, a split EP with The Softrocks for release in late 2006, and a yet-to-be titled full-length slated for 2007.

The Mavens' Word of the Day
Ennui has more of a connotation of weariness than boredom does, and ennui has the 'satiety' connotation also not present in boredom.
Ennui has a somewhat more exotic flavor, which might account for its occasional surges in popularity, but it has been used in English for centuries as a wholly naturalized word, so it's not like you're adopting a really flashy unknown foreignism.
Ennui, a borrowing from French, derives from the Old French enui 'annoyance' from enuier 'to annoy', from Latin roots meaning 'to make hated; cause aversion'.

When I saw the dark figure in the shadow of Sickert’s painting, “Ennui,” a tale was born.
Wilson has dedicated this story to Walter Sickert and Patricia Cornwell--Cornwell, of course, being the best-selling author who has staked her reputation on what she feels is irrefutable proof that the artist Walter Richard Sickert was actually Jack the Ripper.
David Niall Wilson's fog-laden, gaslit meditation upon the murders rests upon a single word: "Ennui", and his beautifully wrought story concerns a psychiatric doctor, Dr. Antoine Dupin, who is consumed by the savage crimes.

It was always my intention when I started "Ennui" to re-use art whenever possible.
Sorry if this somehow lessens the "legitimacy" of this creation in the eyes of some readers; the emphasis here is on the writing, anyway, not the art, so what does it matter if a familiar sketch turns up from time to time?

L'Ennui is driven by a very clever idea and a curious understanding of the perverse quirks of human nature (and male sexuality.) It's classic male fantasy turned nightmare: an older man falls for a younger girl who is beautiful, naive, sexually voracious, and utterly pliant.
It's a pornographic dream that gradually becomes more and more hellish to the middle-aged protaganist, who is disillusioned with life (the French call it "ennui"), and groping for some kind of meaning.
For, ironically, the utterly sexually available girl cannot be possessed; she is utterly opaque, and because he cannot inhabit her mind, cannot make her feel intensely for him, he becomes neurotically obsessed by her, which, of course, leads to all kinds of abjection and abasement for him.
