Typical of rivers in the Coastal Plain of North Carolina, the Neuse enters a basin of intermittent bottomland swamp on its journey towards its outlet.
The dinoflagellate Pfiesteria Piscicida[2][3][4] is present in the river, and is affected by nutrient levels in the river.

The Eno and Shakori are first mentioned by Yardley in 1654, to whom a Tuscarora described, among other tribes of the interior, living next to the Shakori, "a great nation" called Haynoke, by whom the northern advance of the Spaniards was valiantly resisted (Hawks, N. C., ii, 19, 1858).
Eno river about 14 miles east of the Occaneechi village, probably a short distance north east of the present Durham, N. They resembled the Eno in their customs.

This is one of them, and there's a nice parking area and put-in as part of the Eno River State Park.
You can paddle 1.5 miles upstream in the impounded river, and it feels surprisingly wild, despite a few houses on the west bank and the presence of power lines following the river and crossing it several times.
There are huge river birches, some of the biggest fl walnuts I've seen in the Piedmont, lots of oaks, hickories, sycamores, a hackberry or two, ironwoods about as big as any I've seen, and one very steep hillside of beech and mountain laurel above rock outcrops.

Standing on the banks of the Neuse River, I told Terry Neuse River Foundation would have opposed their decision to hold back more water behind Falls Lake and we were concerned that these decisions were made with out public comment.
We would head down river all the way to the mouth of the Neuse which is indicated by a permanent day marker with a huge “NR” on it.

East of Durham, the Eno is joined by the Little River and then the Flat, where it forms the Neuse River; but for the last 20 years their junction has been subsumed by the spreading waters of Falls Lake.
European settlers found the river a convenient source of hydro power and by 1752 were operating gristmills that became, in some cases, commercial centers and growing villages.
The river's future became a point of hot contention, but conservation efforts paid off in the early 1970s with creation of the Eno River State Park in Orange and Durham counties, and of Durham's West Point on the Eno city park.

The autumn undressing of the forest exposes the handiwork of humans and animals alike not usually visible from the water during the greener months: some very old stone walls or building foundations; a vacated bird’s nest; a basketball-sized hornet’s nest suspended from a branch over the water.
At this water level, the Eno had clearly-moving current, a few shallow shoals at the beginning along with other features to work with for eddy turns and peel-outs.
A winter-paddle can be stingy with daylight, and by the time we reached the main rapid at Fews Ford within the Eno River State Park boundaries, the waning-sun had emerged from overcast with a low-angle blinding fury, obscuring any useful view of the complex ledge-system forty yards ahead of us.

Look for where the hiking trail dips down to the river's edge and the wooden walkways and steps along the cliffs on the left side.
There are descriptions of other sections of the Eno River and links to maps on the Association's web site as well.
The large tree that one spanned the river on the section between fews ford and pleasent green dam just past the little red car is gone.

June 2004, 22 acres on the Eno located in the “missing link” region of the Park between Cabes Ford and the Eno Wilderness were transferred to the State of NC for inclusion into the State Park.
