The Enola Gay exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum closed on May 18, 1998.
he Enola Gay, the B-29 bomber used in the atomic mission that destroyed Hiroshima, went on display June 28, 1995 at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. The display commemorates the end of World War II, as well as the role of the Enola Gay in securing Japanese surrender.
The Enola Gay is one of 536 B-29s manufactured at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Factory in Omaha, Neb.

Enola Gay is the B-29 Superfortress bomber that dropped "Little Boy", the first atomic bomb ever used in warfare, when the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) attacked Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945, just before the end of World War II.
Enola Gay was assigned to the USAAF's 509th Composite Group and flew the August 6 mission out of Tinian, a large island with several USAAF bases in the Mariana Islands chain.
Enola Gay became the center of a controversy at the Smithsonian Institution in 1994, when the museum put its fuselage on display as part of an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

This was demonstrated in the well-known (or, in some circles, "little-known") fiasco surrounding the planned Enola Gay Exhibit at the Smithsonian's Air and Space Museum to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the events leading up to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima back in 1995.
The "Enola Gay" aircraft will eventually be completely assembled and displayed at the Museum's new Udvar-Hazy Center, scheduled to open in 2003.
We have also included four photos of the Enola Gay as she appeared on Tinian Island in 1945 and four photos depicting the pieces of the Enola Gay that were part of the 1995 exhibit at the Smithsonian.

Long before the newly named “Enola Gay” lifted off from Tinian Island, her fate had been written in a top-secret military project code named “The Manhattan Engineer District” or what is commonly known as “The Manhattan Project.”
The Enola Gay’s crew of course included Tibbets as the pilot as well as Co-pilot Capt. Bob Lewis, Bombardier Ferebee, Navigator Van Kirk and 1st Lt. Jacob Beser, radar countermeasures officer.

The exhibit in question will display the front 56 feet of the Enola Gay's fuselage (the whole plane is far too large for the museum), with much of the remaining display space devoted to the development of the atomic bomb, its effects on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and anti-nuclear sentiments in the postwar era.
Nevertheless, the Enola Gay bombardier's instructions were to target the bomb on the center of this civilian city.
Although the Enola Gay exhibit had nothing to do with art it had very much to do with exhibition policy in public museums and to that extent the Smithsonian curators were seen as either as heros or villains by the same people who were involved in the earlier debates.
