  Bombieri biography
Bombieri studied with G Ricci in Milan and then went to Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied with H Davenport.
Bombieri applied his improved large sieve method to prove what is now called "Bombieri's mean value theorem", which concerns the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions.
In 1966 Bombieri was appointed to a chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa.

Enrico Bombieri (1940 -) Italian mathematician, best known for the Bombieri-Vinogradov theorem regarding the measure of error in Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions, thought to be one possible direction towards proving the Riemann hypothesis (so much so that the Clay Mathematics Institute asked Bombieri to write the official description for the Millennium Problems).
Bombieri was awarded the Fields medal in 1974.
