ON CAMPUS: Ensemble Intercontemporain -- An evening of 20th-century music
The concert by the Ensemble Intercontemporain at MIT last Friday was yet another testament to the extensive creativity of the composers of this century.
In addition to this, the Ensemble played with such assurance that the concert, which consisted of music that is a challenge to listen to, was thoroughly enjoyable and oftentimes enlightening.
The Ensemble Intercontemporain, founded by the venerable Pierre Boulez, is of such high caliber that every work they played was enjoyable to hear, even for those who have had little previous exposure to twentieth-century music.

Not only did Zappa praise the ensemble ("Their commitment is breathtaking"), but also the interest, attention, and enthusiasm of the audience.
The ensemble repeatedly requested to have Zappa's Synclavier pieces arranged for them, as if to prove to the composer that even the unplayable was actually playable.

Ensemble Intercontemporain was created in 1976 by Michel Guy, then France's minister of culture, fulfilling the vision of Pierre Boulez for an ensemble devoted entirely to performing music of our time.
The Ensemble was established as a permanent body of 31 outstanding soloists, rather than a full-time chamber orchestra.
Boulez, now president of the Ensemble, advocated this more flexible structure, one that would be better adapted to the musical and instrumental requirements of new works.

The French pianist discusses his formative years with Boulez's Ensemble Intercontemporain, as well as the wonders of Messiaen, Ligeti and -- not to be overlooked -- pygmy music.
Before joining that ensemble at age 19, he spent his adolescence immersed in the sound world of Olivier Messiaen, a composer whose music he describes as his "mother language." While these experiences have earned him a reputation as a 20th-century music specialist, Aimard also maintains an interest in more traditional fare.

Paris New Music Review: Boulez Interview
In the ensemble, there is quite a turnover; you can imagine that, especially in an ensemble whose lifespan is over seventeen years, there will be musicians who want to go forward with their own careers.
Or the ensembles who do specialise in modern music have no resources, or very little backing; so you see that in New York, for instance, the ensembles that perform new music are really in great trouble, because they cannot find money.
If you have solid ties, a solid contract, and musicians who are committed--committed for good reasons, of course--then you have an ensemble that is coherent, made up of musicians who are ready to study contemporary music and make their lives--not just their livings--with that.

Not that it's an overly athletic work, but a conventional, 19th-century-style auditorium usually cannot accommodate the musical teams: an instrumental ensemble of 24 musicians in front of the audience, a group of six soloists surrounding the audience, and an electro-acoustic system consisting of a computer and a set of six loudspeakers distributed around the hall.
After the remarkable introduction--a huge upbeat performed by the central ensemble, creating the most itchy feeling of anticipation--the six soloists chime in, enhanced and transmogrified by the live electronics.
There are dialogues between the larger ensemble and the soloists, between the soloists and their transformed sounds, and among the soloists themselves.
