Then there was that nice ending scene and I was surprised Ro made future appearances given I thought she would be a one shot character but she did make the most of her appearances in some of the better fifth season episodes.
Ro makes a good first impression, although the incident in her past which is alluded to isn't fully explained.
Ro was a great character, a little kick in the Federation complacency, a reminder of the shades and compromises required in the real world.

Ro's character was another that was supposed to spin-off onto Deep Space Nine, but it didn't work out that way.

She is not at all what one might expect in terms of a Starfleet officer as established by this series, but she seems far more human than most.
Originally it was planned to have the Ensign Ro Laren character assume the position of Major at Deep Space Nine but Michelle Forbes (who did a wonderful job in this episode) apparently passed on the idea.

It was made quite plain in the ep entitled Ensign Ro.
As for the comments about Michelle Forbes being on DSN, I think that instead of reprising her role as Ensign Ro, she would have made a great Kira Nerys.
It would have been cool if Ro was on DS9, but when you look what we got instead, the utterly fantastic Nana Visitor as Kira, I'm happy how it turned out in the end.
