Though Ensoniq, based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, has often been blamed for an inconsistent assembly line [a problem which, apparently, has been solved in recent years], they have always been at the forefront of synthesizer technology, taking the music world by storm with the Mirage: the planet's first accessible, affordable sampler.
By the late 80's they had perfected their design in the release of the EPS, and taken electronic music to a level of stage performance that was only dreamed of just a few years earlier.
EPS must have "sys ex on", seems to work in multi mode, "transmit on instru chanl" seems to work, create new instrument so you have some place to send the new sample.

Ensoniq ASR, EPS & EPS-16 Plus Tech Info from Syntaur Productions
From the factory, the EPS shipped with 512k of sample RAM, and it could be expanded either to 1 Meg or 2 Meg, using either a 2x or 4x memory expander cartridge.
If you are using an EPS or an EPS-16 Plus, you must also have a memory expander cartridge installed, as the SCSI board physically mounts onto the expander.
Not all SCSI drives are compatible with the Ensoniq samplers, and the older samplers work with fewer drives.

Ensoniq EPS - A Great Keyboard!
The EPS Sampler Keyboard was released in 1988 by a Ensoniq, a medium-sized producer of musical equipment and hearing aids based in Malvern, PA. "EPS" stood for "Ensoniq Performance Sampler", and is now referred to as the EPS "Classic".
The EPS Sampler is really a computer, and in fact has a 68000 processor inside, the same processor as the Macintoshes of the day.
My EPS is set up with my bass samples (acoustic bass if I play hard, P-bass if I play soft) from middle C down, and the other instruments from middle C up.

Online Encyclopedia and Dictionary - Ensoniq Mirage
The Ensoniq Corporation's Mirage was an 8-bit sampler introduced in 1985.
The Mirage was the brain child of Bob Yannes, the man responsible for the SID (sound interface device) of the Commodore 64.
In 1988, Ensoniq followed the Mirage up with the more advanced EPS (Ensoniq Performance Sampler), and later the EPS-16+.

The EPS is just that with clever new features that make it not just a professional studio music production tool, but also a powerful live performance instrument.
The EPS is somewhat multitimbral in that you can have 8 instruments on-line one at a time or stacked* and switching between them is as easy as pushing one of the 8 instrument buttons.
With the EPS in Load mode by first selecting an instrument and then double clicking another instrument both will be played together.

In the end, the EPS worked out ok for me. The sounds available aren't all that great, and it would occasionally crash on me. I developed a minimal wavesample editor that could transfer wavesamples to and from the keyboard via MIDI.
The Ensoniq EPS is also known as the Classic, Original, or 13-bit EPS.
I believe the EPS worked with 16-bits internally, but the analog to digital and digital to analog converters could only handle 13 bits.
