 Articles - Apple IIGS
Audio was generated by a built-in sound and music synthesizer in the form of the Ensoniq Digital Oscillator Chip (DOC), which had its own dedicated RAM and 32 separate channels of sound, which were paired to produce 15 voices, in stereo audio.
Apple Records considered the inclusion of the Ensoniq chip in the II as a violation of that agreement.
However, it provided only mono sound through this jack, and a third party adapter card was required to produce true two-channel stereo, despite the fact the Ensoniq and virtually all native software produced stereo audio (stereo audio was essentially built-in to the machine, but had to be demultiplexed by third party cards).

Vintage Synth Explorer - Ensoniq VFX / VFX-SD
Following up on the heels of the ESQ-1 and SQ-80 synths from Ensoniq comes the VFX with more polyphony and waveforms.
Unfortunately the VFX-SD did not do too well when it was released, so Ensoniq re-released it with a few enhancements and called it the SD-1.
This was a good thing since the VFX was plagued by bugs during its early years and there were several subsequent OS versions released by Ensoniq, the most recent of which can still be downloaded.

Ensoniq - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In 1986, after making an agreement with Apple Computer, the same Ensoniq 5503 chip utilized in the Mirage and ESQ-1 keyboard was incorporated into the Apple II personal computer.
Ensoniq was founded in 1982 by Commodore engineers Robert "Bob" Yannes (designer of the SID audio chip of the Commodore 64 home computer), Bruce Crockett, and Al Charpentier.
Ensoniq products were highly professional; strong selling points were ease-of-use and their characteristic "fat", rich sound (generally thought of as being an "American" quality, as opposed to the "Japanese" sound which was more "digital" and somewhat "cold").

With the ESQ-1, they had alrready begun the hermitage, by creating in their sequences no way to combine the data among each individual pattern.
This changed only SLIGHTLY for the better with the VFX series, but was still kind of difficult to use.
This, from the company that advertised its workstaions as "having taken out the work," was too much for some to deal with.
